What Will You Tell Your Kids/grandkids ?

i was there in munich/plovdiv/guimares/ etc ,

Wasnt there in Wrexham etc

suffered the pain of tranmere/watford/liverpool/stoke etc

Had me dad drag me under the "next game" sign as the police horses trampled all and sundrey

and countless more........

I was born in 1973.......by the time I was 10 it was a bad time for Bolton and me dad was just about to stop taking me as the violence had got so bad he felt he couldnt protect me anymore. ( he is a pacifist by the way and I cant begin to understand how scared he was trying to take me away from games)

I begged, he said no, his reason was he couldnt afford it, so I got a paper round and that meant I could pay for myself, so he persevered. It was £2.50 for me on the Burnden terrace. He could afford it , he just didnt want me to be subjected to such unbelievable violence at that age.

A few years later it was 1991, and we had had a season ticket for 2 years, we had been to wembley twice since then. Its wierd but I remember clear as this day, my ultimate goal was to see Bolton at Wembley.....I did it 1986...we hit the woodwork 4 times and lost 3-0...coming out of the ground it was just non stop abuse from the bristol fans.......the first and last time I saw my dad angry..........next was to go to wembley and be on the terraces.....THEN........lift a trophy, I saw both in 1989, the last year there were terraces at wembley.

My goals were complete.

I never once considered Bolton in Europe and competeing for a trophy.

When that came about I went, so did the mates I had made on the burnden terrace......we didnt know each other from adam but we went together, Unreal.

I have no idea what you will all tell your offspring about the games youve seen, to be honest Im not even sure about mine, but I think Ive had the best period of time possible as a fan of BWFC.

My very first football memory was of me dad saying, "watch that number 9 for Burnley he is a really good player" ...and I watched as Billy Hamilton made a fresh air shot in a dour nil-nil draw.

I cant even renenber if that was before or after Jim McDonagh scored against Burnley but I do remember I was there, and I remember he ran past the half way line to celebrate..

Protests infront of Burnden park as we went down to the fourth, fairy tale rise to the Prem 19 years after being 6 weeks from closure.

I went to Hull on a Friday night and when Im old and senile, thats the game I will be drooling and ranting about in my stupor.

I was grounded on a saturday but hitchiked 20 miles to see Bolton beat preston at Burnden park 2-1 after being down 1-0 after 88 mins Philliskirk score twice against his old club then had to hitch 20 miles back....worth every minute.

,

I remember taking my first girlfriend to a match at Deepdale cos she wanted to know what the fuss was about . 2-0 down after 75 mins with the worst display I have seen and then 15 mins of playing like Brazil 1970, to take a 2-2 draw and we were robbed........the equaliser went in and all I saw was her bounce 50 feet down the terraces in a mad crush......,.after I picked her up , all she said was "I get it now" I should have married her right there and then .

I cried in 1993 when Liverpool equalised at Burnden in the cup, I laughed AND cried when we beat them at Anfield in the replay...I even bought the scouse busters T-Shirt........i sulked like you wouldnt believe at Goodison when barndoor Barlow put them 2-0 up but by the end of the game I had no skin left on either shin (yes I was in the upper tier).

I was at both Arsenal cup games with the neon glider, and remember Bolton fans gridlocked on the motorway passing butties between cars without a beer in sight but high on life and football.

i remember saying , if we sell Frandsen we are doomed after he scored 4 against Brum but only got 2 goals, then he went to Blackburn , then seeing salvation in Jensen.

Curcic was the greatest player I had ever seen in a Bolton shirt, and that was after watching all my heroes, Caldwell, Henry, Hartford, Thompson, felgate, Oghani ,( the first black player at bolton) Sumo, & the Bros boys. Never will we see the like again.

You have Kinkladze, we have Curcic !

2 FA cup semis 2 league cup finals .......nobody ever understands the pain.......

But then Europe twice............with Okocha , Le God, Campo, Stelios, Nolan, Ricky & Jussi ,

Away at the Allianz and SKD leathering some poor kraut within 60 seconds......he still doesnt know what hit him.

Ive seen McGinlay, Walker, MaCateer, Thomo, Pollock, Sheridan , Blake, Taggart, Fairclough, Lee, Brannigan, Mixu, Owen, Green, Whinney, Jules, and sooo many others, rip teams and players to shreds, Ive seen the highlights so often that they made me orgasm.

It just simply doesnt get better or worse or more exciting than us ...........

I dont know what you will tell you and yours, but ya know....when I tell it,,they re gonna listen til Im done talking !

ooH aaH proud to be a Wanderer !

Can I ask you, What was it like watching Nat play ?

Can I ask you, What was it like watching Nat play ?

Nat was a hero to many including myself.

He was one of the bravest footballers ive ever seen.he would take anything the opposition gave him and come back for more, and remember in those days there were some dirty bastards playing. But then, we had our share of em to,but that was what it was like then, none of this rolling over and over when you got ankle tapped or shoved. One of the things we used to say about Nat was that he would head a cannonball for the Wanderers if needed, and i believe he would, those days were good and lots of heros for me then, just as there are for the modern day fan, i have had different favourites through the years but Nat is still my top favourite as he was the one who started it off for me.People ask me if todays footballers are better than the ones i grew up watching and to be honest todays footballers are head and shoulders above what the old time ones were, they are faster more skillful and more athletic.but ask one of em to head a leather ball with laces on a cold wet Saturday in january and i dont think many could or would and that is the difference,Nat would, could and did,all for 10 quid a week.

  • Author

Me dad used to say Nat could head a ball harder than most could kick it...........

and I remember an interview with Jimmy Greaves , and he said The Bolton defence of Hennin, Higgins, Edwards and Banks was the most feared Back line in the land........to the point where Man U front line wouldnt have even come out of the dressing room if the saw that back four.......hence the gravel rash quote and the "when youve finished with your winger chip him over to me"

Nats last public appearence, I managed to get a photo with him and my dad, best day/night ever.

Could you not of watched midget porn instead of typing all that out

 Bastard !

Dust in the eye stuff there briannz. Very similar to waddy but starting 95 onwards.

I just think watching the Whites has been the only thing that has remained constant through my life. As a kid, as a teenager, as a skint student, as a nob who was at raves til 7 then straight the match and now as someone who is settling down with a kid on the way.

Been to European aways. Been to bury. All great days. The best is bringing family to the match. Got my brother going again now. Bring my dad and nephew occasionally and will no doubt be dragging the next generation along ASAP.

Bumdle?

Is that when a bumder has kids?

There's lots we may see again; Europe, for example, could perfectly well come about via a cup at least. We could find ourselves with surprisingly good players -though not of JJ's class - expecially if Eddie's Saudi cousin took over. We might plummit in the future and then see genuine giant killing away days like Arsenal etc.

BUT we'll never ever see two things again:

1 - the atmosphere of a full Burnden complete with disregard for H&S and argy bargy.

2 - we'll never have a open goal to put us in a final with such historic symmetry...first and last finals at old Wembley. Money couldn't have bought that - and Holdsworth couldn't score it.

Aw, Satan. I was feeling quite moved. Now you've got me disappointed all over again.

Great memories, lads. I go back to 1949, so just a re-run of what you've written already.

:drinks:

This thread reminds me how annoyed i was when some posters wrote about "embarrassment and shame" when we got relegated, being in "The Prem"does not come close to my favourite memories..

If carlsberg did forum posts..........top draw waddy, can relate too most of your post

We will ALL be telling our grandkids about attending the bonfire night game against Darlington with just a few other hardy souls.

Indeed. And I haven't even got any kids.

Indeed. And I haven't even got any kids.

Just go out and tell random kids in the street.

Memries,

Like the corners of my mind

Misty water-colored memories

Of the way we were

Scattered pictures,

Of the smiles we left behind

Smiles we gave to one another

For the way we were

Can it be that it was all so simple then?

Or has time re-written every line?

If we had the chance to do it all again

Tell me, would we? could we?

Memries, may be beautiful and yet

What's too painful to remember

We simply choose to forget

So it's the laughter

We will remember

Whenever we remember...

The way we were...

The way we were.

I have got so many watching the whites - European tours which were all top 3 day trips for us, league cup finals, play off finals, fa cup semi finals which were painful. For me the one game that sticks in my mind of all them is the 1-0 win at Ewood to promote us back to the first division after 14 years with Frankie Worthy getting the goal - 20000 whites going mental

i was there in munich/plovdiv/guimares/ etc ,

There are so many memories, but like anything else, trying to tell your children, grand children how you felt at that moment intime is impossible to pass on, you had to be there

It's like telling my grandkids we had a tin bath in front of the fire, it's an alien concept to them.

My best footballing memory is hugging and kissing my son, whilst we both cried when b knight tried to screw us at Ipswich. In all fairness, i think that's what binds us together ( our love for our club, our passion for football, and mutual respect for each other)

Can't ask for more than that !
