May 16, 201313 yr And, dare I say it, he wasn't brilliant. He was good, please don't misunderstand me, but he wasn't great. We fulfilled his ambition well enough ie he got paid more than £3 a week and got to play Premier League football and live in a house with electricity etc. And he was a decent PL player, but would never have attracted a big club, nor would he have commanded a fee that was worth selling him for. He was worth more to us on the books than as a transfer fee. But yes, the fact that various injuries forced him to miss over a third of our games would have been a big factor. That's a cynical view, the lads not got a mercenary bone in his body we should all respect that there's not many left, not a legend but real BWFC hero in a golden period.

It really really fucked me off his attitude at leaving mainly that he thought hed done everything for us, we'd done nothing for him and he was owed everything under the son that doesn't change what he did for us, but it changes where he comes on my list of modern greats. the 'real tough no nonsense man' id loved over the last 10 years turned out to be a little girl and bullied by his misses. Id be snapped in two in a tackle by most footballers, wouldnt let anyone have power over me like that though, especially my wife. Ricky on the other hand, nothing but class in how he left. May 16, 201313 yr for that goal alone at Cardiff against Preston,he goes down as legend for me. I don't think i've ever celebrated a goal as much in my life. It was the end of a very frustrating period for Bolton Wanderers fans

If I remember right, he did as well under megson as he did fat Sam Megson gave him licence and possibly confidence to actually attack. Sam used him defensively because he was inconsistent on the wing. He was a better fullback than winger IMO
May 17, 201313 yr I've never heard a bad word about Ricardo Gardner, & at his best was as good a full back as i've seen,certainly for Bolton. The rest of the time he was a decent enough player but was missing a lot through injuries, which puts him a long way behind Kevin Davies in overall contribution to Bolton Wanderers. For me. both Ricardo Gardner & Kevin Davies would be treated with complete respect & welcome back at Bolton anytime.

Thompson was a huge player in 97/98 IMO. aye, looking at mcginlay on his prem achievements wouldn't do him much justice but for me, thompson flattered to decieve bullied division 2 in the 150 points, 200 goals season is 97/98 the one where we went down? i thought he played for a couple of months at the back end - maybe it was a confidence thing and it came from him scoring at liverpool never had the pace to be exceptional
May 17, 201313 yr He was a decent player but too slow to stand out in the top flight. Division 1/Championship and SPL was his level. Djorkaeff was, IMO, the best player to have ever played for us. What made it all the sweeter is he seemed to have genuine affection for us. I still fondly remember him grinning like a Cheshire cat when being interviewed by Sky after we'd grabbed a precious late win (Okocha penalty at home to Spurs?) and the reporter asked how much the result meant to him. He just pointed to his massive cheesy grin and said "This" ... or something like that.
