Reet, really fancy Berlin for two or three nights next month. I've had a look and it looks fooking huge.

 

Where's the best area to stay and to sup in?  Also, what are the best things to go and see that will take my breath away? 

 

Oh, and presumably I shouldn't mention the war?

We couldn't get to grips with it as it was too big. Metro to the wall, Checkpoint Charlie and the Reichstag, bish bosh, get the train to Hamburg...

its a great city and public transport is bloody brilliant so it may be best to stay on the outskirts and then hop on a very frequent train.

 

if you're a history nerd like me, checkpoint charlie is worth a visit, ( and no gonzo not that kind of charlie)

FWIW daz, i prefer munich, tends to be cheaper to stay and overall i always enjoyed it more

The underground station near Checkpoint Charlie is in COD5 or something.

Aye, but I love my history and shit, which is why I want to see stuff like the three Carlos mentioned.

If you're interested in the history of the place, Mauermuseum next to Checkpoint Charlie, is well worth a visit. It's about the history of the wall and all the escape attempts that were made from East Berlin.

 

Look out for the 'Stolperstein' embedded into the pavements around the city. They're tiny memorials to the people who were rounded up on those spots by the Nazis.

They're not one bit arsed about the war from my experience. Whereas it's still one of our most recent major events, they had another 50 years of history in the meantime.

 

We stayed in a Holiday Inn in the East, only £50 a night and it was 4*, only 100 yards from a stop on the 24 hour tram line.

I much prefer Berlin to Hamburg. Been there twice in the last year.

 

Stay as close as you can to Alexanderplatz as it's a decent central hub

Stayed near Checkpoint Charlie, great City buy coldest place I have ever been in Winter, Was looking at Munich for my pre Xmas jolly this year.

 

Can't go wrong in Berlin with the Metro.

My favourite city in Europe is Berlin.

 

Im not arsed about slumming it so usually stay in private rooms within hostels when I travel about, so shared bathroom but own bedroom. Theres an Australian hostel just away from the centre that has a rooftop bar facing the city, it was fine by me!

 

You can walk between a lot of the main central sights; Brandenburg Gate, Reichstag, the buildings and museums on and around Unter Den Linden, Ritter Sport World (!), Holocaust Memorial, Sony Centre, Checkpoint Charlie, Siegessaule (the tower around where the Love Parade used to be held), the gigantic Tiergarten park, even the new main train station which is worth seeing for the sheer size of it - all that combined with stop offs in bars etc will take most of a day and youll be knackered but its well worth it.

 

Been a few times and still feel like Ive barely scratched the surface. East Berlin is where its at for drinking and nightlife but a lot of it changes often so youll have to find out whats on and whats open when youre there. An area called Kreuzberg is great for bars and take aways, only a few mins on the U-Bahn

 

Always worth a walk up Orianenburger Strasse as well near the centre, some good bars and some absolutely stunning women to be seen too. A place called Tacheles is on there, an old artists comune with a bar and stalls in it - nowhere near as good as it used to be (everyone says that!), but on my first visit there years ago there was a top floor bar in a crumbling room with just big holes in the wall for windows, with a DJ projecting mental visuals from there across the street onto a the wall of a building opposite to go with the mashed up trance he was playing - I was hammered by that point and it felt life changing!

 

Do none of that and youll still have a top time, ace city.

No excuse! its only a few hours in a weekend. My missus, not a football fan, been to Bremen v Dusseldorf and Espanyol v Bilbao in the last twelve months. She'd of had Elche v Valladolid this season to but for them moving the game to Monday night.

Always worth a walk up Orianenburger Strasse as well near the centre, some good bars and some absolutely stunning women to be seen too. A place called Tacheles is on there, an old artists comune with a bar and stalls in it - nowhere near as good as it used to be (everyone says that!), but on my first visit there years ago there was a top floor bar in a crumbling room with just big holes in the wall for windows, with a DJ projecting mental visuals from there across the street onto a the wall of a building opposite to go with the mashed up trance he was playing - I was hammered by that point and it felt life changing!

 

Orianenburger Strasse used to be very 'edgy'. I went to Tacheles many years ago. The whole of the back wall was missing on some floors, no guard rail or anything!

Its a huge place, we went years ago and stayed in a central hotel that was miles out.

 

Alexanderplatz is the main bit

Hotel Alexandra plaza is central. Nice and easy.

Agree with Marc  Berlin is a great city.
If you haven't done a concentration camp Sachsenhausen is right at the end of one of the Metro lines and then about a half mile walk.The Arbeit Macht Frei gate is still there.

Pretty much sums up our experience. Following the path of the wall in the street is fascinating to. It's amazing to see how streets were cut in half by the border between East and West.

For someone my age who lived through the whole separation period, it was literally bringing history to life.

The train tracks to Sachsenhausen used to run along Orianenburger Strasse. i don't know if they're still there.
