February 1, 201412 yr When we were in the prem and getting the big bucks in the spend on the academy as a % of turnover was much smaller and therefore relatively insignificant in the grand scheme of things. Now it's higher so it has to be questioned from a return in investment point of view. Saying all this now is the time we really do need to unearth some quality. I thought we had this elite status that would mean we could get the best lads UK wide at a certain age minimising the effect of being so close to lpool, city, united & Everton. Blackburn have always done well and they are only up the road. If we being one Phil jones through & sell them on then it would pay for the academy for years. Most probably need a premier league platform to get that money for a kid though.

I don't think we should give up on the youth structure but we need people at the club who can persuade the better kids and their parents that the opportunity to play at first team level sooner even in a lower division is better than being at a big club and playing in the reserves.

I don't think we should get rid either. However, name the last youth player to break through & hold down a regular first team place? If we're to have one, we need it to work better for us.

February 1, 201412 yr Personally I would give up on the youth, the club need to save money and this would be a good way of starting, then maybe come to some king of agreement with one of the bigger clubs, either over here or abroad, were we could loan their players.

If I was running it, I'd be doing it in a slightly different way. Rather than pitching money at the parents, I would try to offer to help shape their kid into a man. They'd should be offered an education or trade as well as the chance to develop as a footballer, in case things don't work out for them. That way, I think you'd have a much better chance of recruiting parents and kids who weren't gobshites. That's just me mind.
