Out of interest, are we turning all of the motorway hard shoulders into lanes? Trying to figure out what's going on these days. Presume the M60 around Trafford Centre, etc - we are being trained into using narrower lanes so they can convert the hard shoulder to a lane in time?

Not all motorways just the really busy ones.

Hard shoulders will only be used as running lanes during peak times with reduced speed limits.

The M60 is the latest one to be converted there's loads more round the country already.

And as I've said before, from my experience they do work where they have been installed

As has already happened on M6 north of Brum and either side of Leeds on M62. It will be a peak hours all lanes running with the hard shoulder being designated a running lane. Runs from J7/M60 (Sale) to J 20/M62 (Rochdale)

Yup it might be slow but you keep moving rather than grinding to a standstill as happens usually

They do save time but the time lost during the construction means you'll have to drive on it every day until 2076 to get the time back.

I was surprised how quickly I got past Leeds on the 62 at rush hour the other night with alternating 40, 50 and 60 limits, so it does seem to work. Kept me awake as well as I'd nearly nodded off cruising up the A1 at 80.

 

We've only another 2 years is it to put up with not being able to get out of the north west unless you set off at supper time the day before.

Junction 8 to 18 will be controlled hard lane running with Junctions 18 to 20 permanent hard lane running.  Proposals are being drawn up to then tackle the south east part of the M60 from Ashton round to Junction 5.

and from M62 J20 over the top to link up with Smart Motorway in Yarkshire. From Leeds to Manc and never go over 70, unless you want a ticket.

Seen this in action on the M40 heading into London. Seemed to work well. Thumbs up from me if it helps congestion and traffic flow. Only downside was last week near the Trafford Centre when I thought the driver of the artic alongside was trying to sit on my knee. Not sure the lanes are wide enough for them.

There was an accident on Tuesday between the Prestwich and the A666 junctions. Arctic had taken the side off a 4x4 of some sort which was probably down to lanes not being wide enough!

There's a massive problem at the moment in that the average speed cameras are set to 57 mph; remarkably 1mph over the speed HGVs are governed to. This means that the HGVs are faster than other traffic so cause a shit storm when they're undertaking the ones doing the legitimate 50mph in a lane they want to travel at 56 on. They can't reduce it to catch the HGVs because apparently the transport industry would be upset!

I think there is a clash of agendas

 

 

The Highways Agency seem to be reasonably set up; trying to improve matters
