Don't often go to the pub cos they're usually full of cunts who i'd avoid at all other times so why would i go for a pint with them.

There's no pubs within a 20 minute walk from my house. And those that used to be there I'd only been in on the odd occasion wanderers were on telly at an away game before I got sky.

I'll go for a drink with my mates in Manchester or occasionally Bury but a trip to the local hest happened since my student days.

There's a middle ground.

 

You don't need to be a whacky warehouse or Toby carvery to be successful.

 

The bay horse near me is thriving. Was a little village pub on its arse up until about 4 months ago. Now the pub is spilt, nice little food area at one end and a sports bar at the other for adults only and its booming.

 

Piss pot dives don't survive because not enough people frequent them because they are shit.

 

Micro pubs/ wetherspoons and the likes on the other hand are thriving. Shows what a bit of ingenuity and hospitality can do.

 

Good pubs don't get shut.

I dunno, I suppose you're right, I just can't see any future for pubs in places where there's not much disposable income, whether they're fleapits or if they're trying something different...I reckon' if you went in a pub up Horwich, Harwood or Edgeworth tonight they'd be busy, go in one in Farnworth and they'd be dead. When it's nudging four or even up to five quid most places aside from Wetherspoons it can't help matters imo.

There was only one pub on grange park and that got shut a few years ago.

 

Mereside pubs are seldom seen too.

 

Supermarkets selling cans of ale for 40p is a big problem with it all.

 

Thwaites do ok round these parts, they let the managers have more of a free reign than most other breweries therefore keeping the pub a pub.

 

The only free houses now I know are in town

I'd agree with gonch on this. Good pubs don't shut. We as a nation (not necessarily myself) need more than just beer in the pub. Pretty much all the good ones do decent food now days.

 

As for clientele, I blame the fact that purple tramp juice is now acceptable to drink among men folk as the biggest problem.

SPOONS . (Possibly one of the best) . Plenty off well kept ale.Mixed ages. Decent grub . Ok its what it is.cheap but edible. If ya want posh grub go elsewhere.

THE WHITE LION. Proper blokes pub. Plenty of banter. And if you need a roofer , plasterer , brickie or mechanic . No problem.

Reform Club. Card schools rule.

Wheatsheaf . Caters for the younger ones.

So keeps them all in one place.

Back to card schools; the last time I was in one was at The Craven Heifer at Astley Bridge. Me and a mate went round Astley Bridge pubs having a drink in each but ended up in a 3-card brag school. Not wanting to lose too much I took £20 out of my wallet and decided that once it was gone, it was gone.

After a few hours, I went for a piss and counted my profits... £135.00 in notes plus whatever change was in my spot. Someone had done some serious losing.

Conversation got to who was up and who was down so I reported that I was a couple of quid up. Nobody claimed to be more than ten or so down and there were only 6 or 7 of us.

I know the rules about always giving your fellow players chance to win back their losses so I played like a twat for a dozen or so hands and lost the £35. Still went home £80 up on the night. I don't think I've played cards for cash since except the odd pound-in game of cribbage or 9-card Don.
