I also remember the chaps on the Burden Paddock singing it on the last home game of the previous season Mick, pretty sure a flag was flown saying the same, could swear it Ste aka LA Whites who brought the flag. Like you correctly say, that season was basically utter dog shit with highlights few and far between except for those in your Bowie styled hair....... Fast forward to the next couple of seasons, and by Jove, they were really pitiful, a perpetual struggle against relegation with the only highlights knocking the fuck of those Blackburn lot in their end on the Embankment and also the rise of the casual era, which beautifully came to everyone's attention in 82/83 at Rochdale in the Lancs Cup and on the opening day at Burnley when hundreds of "lads" just simply appeared out of the donkey jacket era. Following aways in 81/82 and 82/83 were shocking. Watford saw 91 in our end as we were thrashed and dry bummed 3-0 by Elton John, John Barnes, Luther Blissett and Co...but those 91 didn't half have a laugh with their then un homophobic non stop song aimed at the Watford chairman. Same at QPR,Orient etc.....staggeringly low numbers but still had a laugh watching our team. From the less than 100 hundred present at those games, I can probably name fifty or sixty of those long suffering fans. From those fifty or sixty, I can probably and quite rightly say approx half of them are present on wanderersways and were on rivals from day one. I doff my cap to all these from those dark grim days watching the Whites, Mounts, Brixton, myself, the AHM.........most of us travelling on the offficial travel club as hardly any one else could be arsed running other forms of transport barring the Albion coach. Those lads I've mentioned above can also rightly be responsible for bonding, giving the knowing nod to each other over many seasons following, uniting when HW created rivals and seeing us all sticking together on this forum for many years. We may argue like fuck with each other, but we're all true and loyal Wanderers. Whiter than White. We need that spirit this season. It's going to be tough without doubt, but our fans are unique and like a Band of Brothers. God Bless you all.

We was dire that day, and the rest of the season. That was the day we had 45 lads in a box van...& a few more on the way back, twas fookin hot in there, had the back door up most of the time. Couldn't get away with it now but the police just wanted us of their patch.

July 3, 20179 yr Don't know why people moan about the 80s, well ok the football was utter gash, but apart from that it were ace!!!!! And blue shoes upon a man were not frowned upon. I think we took more to some away games than our average home gate..........
July 3, 20179 yr Might be something to do with death trap stadiums, Police treating you like a criminal, folk looking to kick your head in every 5 minutes, the National Front recruiting at the game and Elton Welsby.

July 3, 20179 yr I don't know what the exact number was but one of the great things about the Sam era was that we chalked up over 100 league crowds in a row over 20,000. We were back in 01 rather than 81.
July 3, 20179 yr 80/81 memories: * We smashed Newcastle 4-0 in the game straight after the Notts Co opening day. Brian Kidd hat trick after he signed that Summer. Have a memory of the Geordies walking off the Embankment en masse in disgust. * A dismal Autumn 1-4 home defeat to Swansea. Massive "down to earth" stuff. Burnden virtually empty when the final whistle blew. Lots of chants of "what a load of rubbish". You never hear that any more! * A 4-2 home win over Cardiff in which Dusan Nikolic scored an absolute pile driver. * A 1-1 Spring home draw with West Ham that featured a massive and very violent brawl in the Manny Road North paddock, which went on for a good few minutes longer than it should have because the Police couldn't unlock the gate in the perimeter fence.
