804 visa applied onshore grants you a bridging visa. Wait time is 30 years and you'll always be in limbo but some use this to get a foot in the door. 

864 is the contributory version, much shorter wait, but it's big bucks.

Consult an immigration specialist if you're serious. See if you can work, get Medicare, travel limitations etc.

Neither of those routes work for me on the grounds of Balance of Family Test: More of the applicant’s children must live in Australia than in any other country 

We have 3 kids, only one lives in Oz.

The current "plan" is to technically homeless/nomadic and split our time between Bali (and possibly Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia), Australia & the UK.

I'm putting my house on the market next week, so when the caravan park I spent 10 months of the year at, closes for Jan/Feb, I'll head East on a "research trip"
