May 9, 20188 yr Clearly not in the "greatest game ever" category... but similarities to Sunday. Bolton 3 Sheff Weds 1 in the final game of Div 2 in 81/2. We had to win to stay up, they had to win to go up. Game played against a backdrop of constant crowd trouble. Was young at the time so memories of the context aren't clear. There was certainly pretty raw jubilation and it wasn't an expected victory. However I think I am right to say our ultimate safety depended on Cardiff losing to Luton 3 days later, which they duly did. This in the days when games were allowed in the midweek following the final weekend of the season - usually in seasons when bad winters meant fixture congestion. Worth a mention as it was George Mulhall's last match as manager of the club and of course he sadly passed away the other day. Bolton News failed to mention it in its article about last day scrapes late last week. I remember the occasion clearly - we were a goal down to Wednesday when Jeff Chandler equalised - for the first time i got all emotional and welled up (I do it regularly these days!). We went onto win but our survival wasnt confirmed because as you say Cardiff who were two points adrift of Wanderers had a final game at home to already Champions Luton. I managed to find live Radio commentary in the second half - in bleeding Welsh! .Although I didnt have a clue I could hear the Cardiff fans in the background. They were as ever insulting Swansea fans who they facing in the Welsh Cup Final. I took this as a good sign as they were not singing "We are staying Up". I was right Luton won three - nil. My favourite game Wrexham - simply because we had been starved of success for so long - since the two years we spent in Division One we had witnessed pretty much one relegation battle after another aside from the season we beat Walsall 8-1.
May 9, 20188 yr Good memory Ianovit. Hadn't realised we went a goal down. I believe this was a Sheff Weds team complete with a central midfielder called Gary Megson! My memory is of it being a typical last day of the season, sunny warm day and dogs abuse being dished out to their winger Terry Curran. We sacked George Mulhall days later and appointed John McGovern. Maybe that's a history lesson that we shouldn't sack Parky!

Think Terry Curran scored for them early on. Dennis Peacock - a name to conjure with from the early 80s! Wednesday had a good team at the time. It was a season or two later they got promoted to the top flight. Looked the game up: 3-1.... Jeff Chandler, Alan Gowling, Tony Henry. Gate of 13,500. Given we had just over 5,000 on v Derby a few days before it's safe to assume that was one big away following.

May 9, 20188 yr I was thinking earlier this season that football doesn’t mean as much to you emotionally as you get older, but Sunday proved me wrong. I’m 49 but celebrated that game and got as emotional just as much as any big game as I can remember. Was a bit pissed in westhoughton later and bumped into Tony Kelly, ended up telling him how good it felt and what a good player I thought he was. I was expecting him to fuck off quick but ended up having a right good pissed up chat with him. Fucking top bloke, wanderer through and through.

I had a pre-booked holiday to a remote Greek island with my girlfriend who is now my wife. We flew out Saturday morning. I could not find the result despite mithering several pale faced tourists who arrived on Sunday. The dialogue - "Have you just arrived?" "Yes" "You don`t happen to know the score Bolton v Newcastle?" "No". in those days papers were delivered effectively a day late so frustrated until Monday morning I headed down to the kiosk on the quayside - grabbed a Sunday paper - YES we won three one. I was manically jumping around - the guy in the kiosk clearly thought I was a looney. I paid him and literally skipped child like back to our room. I wrote on the obligatory postcard to work Kevin Keegan Roadshow comes to an end at Burnden Park. We got relegated that season.
