Due to the speed of the appointment, Lee has revealed his position will be re-evaluated by chairman Phil Gartside come the end of the season.
"I'm very, very excited at the prospect (of managing Bolton)," he said on Sky Sports News.
"It's a great legacy that Sam has left and I'd just like to continue with the good work that he's put in place.
"You should never be surprised in football. I've had less time to think about it than the chairman has. I'm very proud to be here.
"I've been very fortunate to work under some very good people and certainly Sam was right up there, if not the best.
"We've got these two games in which we need to try and get our place in Europe. Because the chairman's only had a short space of time we'll re-evaluate it after that."
