Moderators Casino Posted July 3, 2023 Moderators Share Posted July 3, 2023 LBC ran with a story earlier that 10s of thousands of schoolkids have died due to asbestos in schools As nasty as it can be, im calling bullshit @itdiddidit?
Site Supporter Winchester White Posted July 3, 2023 Site Supporter Share Posted July 3, 2023 My grandad who was more than a bit of an engineering boffin always said asbestos was perfectly safe when stable. Problem is, when it is broken or even worse some used it in plastering walls, then it is a real issue.
Site Supporter Spider Posted July 3, 2023 Site Supporter Share Posted July 3, 2023 Disturb asbestos at your peril Left alone it’s harmless but once it gets airborne you’re in big trouble. Like breathing in a million shards of glass. Cancer awaits. Big money in its removal.

I can only speak about my situation. And I can tell you that the safe guards & welfare of students and staff is second to none when it comes to this shit. There is quite a bit of it where I work (because a lot of the site was built pre 1980s) but none can be seen or touched by pupils and 99.9% of the staff. The documentation you HAVE to keep on the location of the stuff is outrageous. Everytime workman come to do any work they have to be informed about any in the location that will be working in. I reckon Bolton town hall, and other old type public buildings, are covered in the shite; and with nowhere near the same up-to-date records that schools have to keep. Moderators Casino Posted July 3, 2023 Author Moderators Share Posted July 3, 2023 I dont doubt the schools are all over it, hence my scepticism Every business in the land is required to have a register/RA for asbestos We had quite a bit in Bury and so long as you leave it alone, its generally not an issue

I worked on Bolton Town Hall on the first phase works about 10 years ago when they were selling their outlying buidlings and moving all the staff under one roof when they realised they were skint. The boiler room will still have it in to a degree even after many removals over the years. It's behind conduits and trapped by the body of the building in many places. The really worrying thing was they'd had a survey which missed loads as Bolton Council pushed the survey onto ISG who were running the refurb works. They went with the cheapest survey price and hey presto the survey run out of sampling money and skipped a bit here and there. We discovered a duct that run under the road to the magistrates court full of pipe insulation all hanging off. There was another tunnel that runs over to the museum which wasn't quite as bad. I woiulnd't have wanted to go to the Albert Halls though as there was asbestos floating about and being pushed about by the aircon units and also behind all the fancy radiator grills running through the mayors offices and also the Halls. Sleep well

All of the AHM elders are still about and we went to schools covered in that shit.
itdiddidit?
I can't see how they can put a figure on the number of deaths unless everyone has had a diagnosis of an asbestos related disease. Even at that point they'd have to have a degree of probability of when and where they were exposed. Newspaper headlines are made by adding a 0 on the end of things. It keeps me in work and busy I've been mowed out for months mostly in underground reservoirs on UU sites.
Site Supporter Alf Hartigan Posted July 3, 2023 Site Supporter Share Posted July 3, 2023 I've reported loads of the stull dumped in the countryside, all trampled over by innocent walkers. It's always been removed sharpish tbf. As regards the 10,000 kids, I will call bullshit too.
embankment
We chucked it on bonfires . Now a more serious comment. It was everywhere, pipe insulation, pre fab houses , every single car on the road (brake discs) , artex paint , cladding, fire retardant paint , gaskets . It's a killer that lies dormant . In buildings and very sadly in LUNGS. Total respect is required at all times. If you suspect its there , piss off and call in the experts
green genie
Amazed my brother is still alive. He got job straight of school removing asbestos from the multi story car parks around city centre. On face of it things were done properly with positive pressure seals and PPE but being bunch of knobs when it got too hot they’d be working with overalls around waste like they’d seen every builder doing. 45 years on not taken him. Fingers crossed it won’t, but when I did the asbestos courses they said it could fester in your lungs for 50 years before becoming a problem. I know in schools you’ll see the the little coloured dots all over the ceilings to indicate its presence. I’d be surprised if it’s causing the kids any issues at all. Yeah, I’ve done asbestos awareness as well . Plenty in old electrical switchgear as well as buildings worked on.

Sleep well We used to use those tunnels for breathing apparatus training. The town hall stopped us around 15 years ago due to unsealed asbestos lagging and building materials. Site Supporter only1swanny Posted July 4, 2023 Site Supporter Share Posted July 4, 2023 Wife's grandad died from asbestosis. Nasty horrid thing, drilling holes for plumbing. Schools are generally really on it, they know where it is and ebeb the badly ran schools are cautious to the extreme about it. From experience. They know where it is now because they have had to have asbestos surveying reports. They certainly didn’t know where it was when I was at school. gonzo
We found some on an old pensions gaff I was working on replacing a huge slab of access flooring. I'd been drilling in to the cunting stuff for a week before it was spotted. Il be dead before it hits anyway.
Traf
My grandad died from asbestosis in 1976. My gran was one of the test cases for combo and got a relative shitload of combo. Didn't bring him back, though. He was a Royal Marine in the war and the Japs couldn't kill him, but fucking dust did.
Members bolty58
Horrible stuff and deadly. There should be a programme to completely remove it from everywhere possible. Wittenoom is an interesting place for bad reasons. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wittenoom,_Western_Australia
