only1swanny Posted September 13, 2023 Posted September 13, 2023 Seems that Bolton Uni don't want to be called that anymore and want to rebrand... Former student there and tbh I'm not a fan of the idea. My degree was at Bolton Institute and my masters as University of Bolton.. Quote
Spider Posted September 13, 2023 Posted September 13, 2023 Jesus Diver will be having a heart attack Can they not call it Uni of South Lancashire instead? Quote

MickyD Posted September 13, 2023 Posted September 13, 2023 (edited) Will a re-brand elevate it from being one of the lowest performing universities? edit: league of universities. MickyD Posted September 13, 2023 Posted September 13, 2023 Besides, calling it University of Greater Manchester, even if Greater Manchester was a thing, means it would hope to be the University of Bolton, Wigan, Bury, Rochdale, Oldham, Stockport, Tameside, Salford, Manchester, and Stretford. Manchester and Salford already have one (two in Manchester’s case) so how do they hope to identify as the whole of Greater Manchester? Quote

Its actually a genius idea. Quote

Bolton 120/127 https://www.thecompleteuniversityguide.co.uk/league-tables/rankings One of the most diverse universities in the UK. They aim for that and do extremely well with it. Oxford and Cambridge only accept the elite, Bolton has taken on anyone with the desire to learn and helps them achieve what they didn't thing possible, It's truly a lovely set up and from the three universities I've been to, head and shoulders above the others. Oxford and Cambridge only accept the elite.. No they don't, there is a lot skewed in that. Most of the people I work with went to Oxbridge, and funnily enough they went to private schools and have very wealthy backgrounds. Yes they except the elite, but not academically all the time If you want to do medicine, Bristol and Nottingham are better. Dentistry, there isn't a better university than Manchester. Manchester Met has one of the leading Drama courses in the country. As I've told mine, they are lucky going to an all girls grammar in Canterbury - they get better links to unis. I went to Man Met (after getting kicked out of Leeds for going to one lecture in a year) OK course because I could work in the industry I ended up in, but then there were people there who couldn't pass water. Bolton uni is where my mum went to as a.mature student. They couldn't validated degrees at the time. My ex works now for Canterbury Christ Church (Canterbury Poly in Old money) those sorts of unis are better than Red Bricks in many subjects but you still need to get them in and Gtr Manchester Uni is a better selling point that university of Bolton. Why did you get kicked out of Leeds? Lectures aren’t compulsory. Or they weren’t in my day, which I’m assuming isn’t much further back than your day. Quote

They said I could resit but decided to leave. Then in a last chance saloon, didn't miss one lecture in my whole time at Man Met. Plus went super extra which started me.on my career as I thought after fucking up once can't afford to that again. Quote

That's why they are 1 and 2 on the list.. Bolton take people in with little prospects and send them away with a better chance of a career than they did before.. People like me that don't fit the mould, The learner support there is fantastic, however I can only compare it to Manchester Met and Edge Hill. Quote

It's so edges towards those that have, they lord ther fact they now take 40% of kids from comps. How many kids in this country go to comps over private schools? That in itself shows the failure of it. Don't swallow that crap that an Oxbrige degree equals the intellectual elite of this country. Quote

Seen it working at Bolton, access course, undergrad, and onwards.. That's what makes it different and why they aren't bothered about being bottom of "that" league.. However I will bow down to your superior knowledge on the subject over my own experience of doing just that (having dropped out of 6th form with poor AS results). The league linked is not purely based on intellectual elite, that wasn't what I meant.. however if you skimming the cream of either a level results, or wealthy kids, then you're going to have a higher percentage of learners that have career prospects, which is one of the key factors in the link that was posted. FWIW, I think there were about 25 lads from my year in school that went to Oxford or Cambridge, the school wouldn't support an application unless they were predicted straight A's at A Level, well heeled or not.. I'm not, and the stats back it up. As I already said. There are thousands of bright kids never go to Oxbridge, and it's not because they aren't bright enough. If you can be bothered go through the intake schools of the colleges. If you think it's an egalitarian entrance then you are being naive. Quote

Jnr was told they'd need 3 x A for a place at Cambridge, they didn't get selected by the college they applied to and didn't get picked up from the pool, so they're off to their 2nd choice, Exeter, this weekend. For the record, they got A* A* A and I'm glad they're not going to Cambridge. Quote

I knew of a few people who I went to sixth form with who got straight As and either didn't get in to Oxbridge or turned them.down as the course they wanted to do was better suited to what they wanted to do afterwards. Exeter - hope they enjoy it! Tell them to go and see a show at the Northcott - lovely theatre. Thom Yorke's old uni as well. And that is pretty much all I know about Exeter. And I recall a steep hill outside the train station 😁 Quote
