It doesn't matter if it puts more dosh in.

But it suggests prospective students don't view Bolton as a place to go or the top brass have little faith in the town's reputation.

Bit bloody stupid given any bugger looking to apply will still know where it is.

I'll be intrigued to see if it ever yielded more money or increased reputation. Not that it would necessarily be easy to prove either way.

The university is the only institution that has made notable improvements to the town centre over the last few years.

The more they do the better, however they achieve it.

Having seen some of the sights today alone, we are beyond desperate

Just checked.

BBC believe it or not!!

Point proven.

Relatively high grades for a course that is arguably far from academic.

It's become tail wagging dog- companies now demanding degrees for jobs that aren't necessarily required. But, as most now have one, it's the first way of sorting out prospective employees.

However a talented, artistic person who could do all necessary techniques by practical experience, via a hobby/self employment wouldn't be considered?

It's horse shit.

BWFC changed the stadium name to Toughsheet.

Money plus discussion = result for all concerned.

It’ll still be in Bolton. I just don’t see how it matters.

UCLAN does ok and nobody in Lancaster seems to care about the name.

Tough sheet must have offered more money. I think it's right that sponsorship should be with businesses not public sector/semi public sector institutions in any case (think Bury & Trampmere being sponsored by their councils). If you asked a member of the Wanderers Board or the Local Authority Cabinet they would consider the university an anchor institution in any case.

UCLAN is mainly in Preston not Lancaster anyhow. If you asked folk in East Lancs they would probably complain about resource being sucked into the county's administrative centre Preston anyway. Just like we complain about resource to Manc or Horwich/Westhoughton/Farnworth moaning about Bolton.

Not sure what the rebadge achieves, just put in your marketing literature you can get to manc fairly easy.

It's still a fucking Mini Metro and you'll still end up living near Gibraltar Street.

I didn't explain it very well!

Universities create diverse courses to make money. Whether those courses represent value for money and offer quality career prospects is greatly open to debate.

By having a rare or unique course, means they can "up" the grade requirements as there is no competition. Makes it appear a great but It doesn't necessarily correspond to the job at the end.

Take something like environmental science, where you'd assume many places offer it: they will have to be good quality because of the competition, and the better ones will require higher grades.

I'm trying not to be too revealing of my own experience in case the course is still available, but there was a course that involved some marketing studies. It was regularly filled up with applicants who had failed to get the grades to study marketing as a specific degree.

Diluted the overall quality, and many were frankly time wasters.

I did think the embroidery course requirements might be a touch lower, but it doesn't surprise me overly because it's how they market and manage their courses. They will adjust requirements though to ensure a supply.

They are businesses, but are not necessarily needing to offer value for money.

Sooner or later, one government or other is going to clamp down on it all as it's so wasteful, and start to offer a more balanced approach to achieving a similar career: via a quality degree or a more vocational type approach with on the job learning.

Too far skewed currently towards academia- it's unfair and potentially holding the country back.

Hope it's a bit clearer! :)

Why would they? Lancaster University is still called Lancaster University. The University of Central Lancashire is in Preston...

Probably the biggest "what if" of my life. Got offered the chance to do PPE at Oxford. Think they wanted more oiks or something.

You should have done it. Could have taken out the fuckers before they got to play God with a country and fuck it up.

Its also really modern/post-modern ie pretty ugly. Most of the students live in Lemmington Spa, which is lovely.

Seems the arts is festoon with people from Warwick Uni, and I don't know they teach them there but by lord they have a high opinion of themselves.

Good and bad.

Away from the university buildings, there is an increase in shitty takeaways and litter.

Granted, that is a social issue, but it doesn't help.

Not sure if it's still the same but Warwick always seemed to have a chip on its shoulder because it wasn't Oxford or Cambridge but to be fair even back years ago they had some very decent courses.

Always stuck in my mind that I got asked "How many grains of salt are there in a salt cellar?" at an interview there once.

Universities have become a business enterprise so they can do whatever they want for me. I went when it was BIT (paid for by my employer. They got their monies worth and I got my education without debt. Better days.) I guess, like UCLAN, it will eventually be known as UGMAN.

This thread is perhaps a reminder of how things used to be. With my experience as an example. Employers actually used to pay for their employees further education for the benefit of both parties.

They still do, just that apprenticeships went out of fashion.

Now they seem to be returning, but slowly.

Graduate apprenticeships are definitely worth pursuing; still a potential route for my lad in a year or two. There is no huge debt, and a job too.
