I quite like the fa cup.  All those "white hot" games weren't simply flashes in the pan, but part of building towards something even better. We've done nowt in the competition for ages, and

  • On the face of it the league campaign benefits from lack of cup complications but this is shocking. Indeed our overall away form is concerning and this is not wholly out of keeping with some previous

  • Theyve certainly benefited from side-stepping that shit today!  I was questioning earlier this week whether Tuesday might be too soon for Erhahon to start a league away game, now I’m not so sure!

Lot of knickers in a twist about getting knocked out of a cup that no longer has any meaning or financial worth.   Very little interest shown in it which would of been shown if that fixture was at home and we would of got 4000 on at a tenner a pop.

We all know there is one priority and I,m more than happy to stick with that.

Chill out

At our level the financial reward of drawing a prem team away in the next round is huge

Correct. Simpletons

It's not though is it.     Draw fulham, brentford etc at home and we,d get 8 or 9000 on.

Financial reward only arrives in the last 4 of this once brilliant cup competition.

That's why he said away

We get say Man Utd or Spurs away and we get an equal share of the gate receipts

Far more money in the coffers than playing Weston-super-Mare at home

@bolton va va  gives a good first hand view. I don’t disagree with anything he says above.

I’ll add to it.

It’s a hard one to quantify and explain, but the issue for me was more a collective one than individual one - so SS has to take a large proportion of the blame today.

But that said I don’t blame him making rotations and bringing in periphery players - I repeat it was the combinations and the collective output  that was the issue today.

I disagree with the easy individual criticisms - Randall (who had a decent first half) Cogley (who had the most ineffective ACD in front of him he’s had all season) and even Sheehan and Morley never stopped trying (I didn’t see anybody display a shocking attitude out there) they were just poor together and Sheehan often got caught in possession which hindered us.

Again as Va va says, I agree, we always need at least one of Simons, Erhahon or Dempsey (probably two!)

That left side of defence was awful Toal and Taylor with a lightweight Gale in front should (I’ll vent my inner @masi 51 here) NEVER be seen again 😂

So while it went wrong on many levels yesterday if we learn from it and these mistakes aren’t repeated then I’ll be glad it was today that a 4/0 defeat happened and not a league game.

I would not go as far everything was wrong yesterday with team selection so i will give you my view

keeper.....National league standard

Rightback  Lge 2 Standard

centre backs RS 3rd choice and played as such  LS should only play on the RS

LB   Is a Centre Half  awful at lb

Midfield two   slow and weak  Sheehan needs  Simons or Erhahon  to do his dirty work then he excels

Attacking midfielder get rid

LW  ineffective all season away from home  RW found out and you only need to put a right sided defender to let him cut in and take away most of his game

CF Isolated with two wingers

There you go.......Whatever could go wrong with that line up..... system

Against a 342, you can't play a 4231 unless your middle two have physicality, Sheehan and Morley don't.

To cover for them everyone was moving into the middle and dropping too deep which then exposed our back 4.

It was very similar to the last days of Evatt stuff, different tactics on paper of course but the same result.

We have to be prepared to do something different away from home.

You're right from one point of view that the above teams wouldn't be a huge draw, but we played the most unglamorous Prem team in history a couple of years ago (Luton), on a Tuesday night too, and got 11k on with hardly any away fans.  That's bums on seats not tickets sold so not far off a normal midweek league turnout.

But - who cares about the finances?  If it was Man U, Everton away etc, I don't give a stuff if it makes us some money.  The cups for me have always been about the potential to have a big game to look forward to and to create memories, they are few and far between in this awful division.

The only FA Cup memories I'm taking from the last few years are the humiliating defeat at non league Stockport and 4-0 at L2 Swindon.  I live in hope of having a positive one for this generation at some point.

What are you basing your judgment on regarding the attitude of certain players? And who are they?

Did you get a US armchair stream over there?

Everyone moving into the middle, dropping too deep, similar to the last days of Evatt - nonsense

Must have been an interesting stream cause I saw none of that! Are you sure it was our game you were watching? 😂

If anything, in the second half in particular, the opposite of some of those things were happening!

It was almost a 4-2-4 with not enough  people helping out in the middle. There wasn’t enough coming back from the front 4, hence the disconnect, and Morley/Sheehan being isolated and overrun and sideways and backwards coming into play.

I don't recall sensing a bad attitude from the players in any game.  If only it was that simple, we could flush out the bad eggs, but we don't seem to have any.  No Mo Salah's here.

Did SS not see this and change it? Away from home in my opinion we play 3 midfielders as this 2 isn’t working. Also managers have worked Duberry out so why not try him on the opposite wing.

Correct. And the idea that wiinning a bog standard league match at Mansfield makes up for that weedy performance is laughable
If the squad isn't good enough to knock a 4th Division team out of the cup and then beat Mansfiekd it won't be getting promoted..

Just seen on twitter we've not won away in the FA Cup for 13 years now, sheesh.

been saying this for a number of weeks...Give Duberry licence to play both wings and that in turn will free a spot for Forss to play alongside Burstow up front

A midfield three out of Ehrahon, Simons, Sheehan and Dempsey would also make us stronger and harder to break down

Have to agree is SS become fixated with his system just like Evatt was ?

One of the things we cried out for under Evatt was a plan b and adjusting to what’s it front of you. I felt he was stubborn ala Amorim at utd. So far, it seems to be that schuey is also very much of a similar mould and only makes significant changes when it’s shit or bust. It’s not hard to figure us out, pack the midfield, double up on ACD and get at Conway down the side or over top. Pretty easy to pull apart. I know there’s been a lot of talk about Taylor but I’d like to see him get a run of games in the league to see what happens. Both wingers need to switch position and like we’ve all said numerous times, just get crosses in. League 1 defenders are shit. That’s what every other team does, load the box and get it in the mixer: I also think there’s too much rotation, there should be a settled side now and if you’re not in it, tough shit because everyone’s had opportunities

You are usually a good and informed poster on here.

But if you were watching/listening/following the game yesterday you’ll know that for a period he did switch ACD onto the other side!

But he also got nothing out of the Boltonian Jimmy Ball (next door neighbour to his mum and dad - known him since he was a toddler!) who came on at HT, before moving back.

He also played a few different systems when the subs came on. He’s tweaked the midfield tactics a bit this season too.

All these uninformed opinions comparing him to Evatt are crackers.

Only 10?  11th and 12th games are at home, we aren't losing them.

Someone mentioned that SS was visibly upset when the team was getting on the coach back. Good.

However in his interview he said the team had let the fans down - but not him.

Sounds like the double speak of not wanting to undermine the players whilst attempting to assuage the fans.

I understand that it’s a fine line to tread and that sports psychology is an incredibly important part of managing a squad and preparing players for a game but …. I think the balance is wrong. It’s one thing to try to convince players they are great and bolster their egos and another thing to have players going into a match thinking the game is already won.

Most fans would say that they are professionals and should give everything for the wages they receive and their own pride, let alone for the manager and the club. Schumacher’s public statement had a bit of “don’t worry lads, I still have confidence in you” about it.

Personally I feel that there needs to be a bit more of the “we’re going to war against a team that think they are better than you, that want to take away everything we’ve achieved from you, so get out there and put everything on the line to make sure they don’t and prove them wrong” - and that should be before every game, regardless of who we are playing.

I only hope that behind the scenes Schumacher manages to turn them into warriors who are prepared to bust a gut to win, because that is what we need.

As others have mentioned, it’s not so much the defeat (bad enough) as the manner of the defeat (unacceptable).

Another chalk and cheese example to Evatt.

- Called it out for what it was - rubbish

- He didn’t sugar coat it

- No excuses

- No baffling explanations

- A level headed response to a very poor day.

He’ll keep in-house (as he should do) any individuals that he feels aren’t cutting it along with any self-criticism/reflection about the side he picked.

As he said - Mansfield WILL (and has to be) better

It’s been ten months since IE left the club and yet Schumacher is still compared with him - despite a considerable turnover in playing staff.

Why?
