My deck was similar- well raised off the ground. Painted it regularly, used joist hangers etc. Can't get the paint everywhere unfortunately, and that's perhaps where the rot started. Can't remember precisely, but it started going after around 12 years, and didn't last much longer. Disappointed in the end. Keeping it clean is a nightmare too. Quote

The biggest rot problem was where the missus placed planters onto the deck, I nave banned that. I give the decking planks a lathering of cuprinol every couple of years or so, the structure below appears to be holding it's own. But I still think its probably the best solution for Traff on "borrowed" land and pretty quick to boot Quote

only1swanny Posted Wednesday at 22:20 Posted Wednesday at 22:20 Just done my decking Cost me 300 quid for the decking wood itself and about 150 for the framing timber. its 4.5m x 3.4m and covers the area that used to be a greenhouse. I put in a noticeable drop towards one side so that water runs off and a 4mm gap between beams to allow run through. Home bargains have a decent deck (ronseal) paint, but I keep forgetting to pick it up.. That's kids job as i drew the short straw building the bloody thing. Quote

Is it UC4 timber? Timber will be permanently wet so needs treatment accordingly. Treat sawn cut edges too. Quote

Had about 200 bricks and a load of flags. Also paid 200 quid for 1800kg of plum slate to replace the grass and make it low maintainance as i hate gardening (Sorry TMGG but it's urgg) Quote

Splashed out on composite T&G boards as can’t be arsed with the hastle of recoating wood. Frame seems to be holding up but has good ventilation Quote
only1swanny Posted Thursday at 04:49 Posted Thursday at 04:49 Just functional..looks much better and can use it now, doesn't matter that it doesn't look professionally made. Before any of the WW officials start up.. I did the strip of block paving and it's being levelled out at half term. It's a good cheapish way to cover a multitude of sins and much cheaper than the 6k I was quoted. Quote
Tonge moor green jacket Posted Thursday at 07:49 Posted Thursday at 07:49 Saw one fella (YouTube iirc) who reckons we all use deck boards the wrong way up. Must say, I'm inclined to agree with him. The grooves fill with shit, and hold rain water. Flat surface makes it run off quicker. Quote
