Is it not really just the case that we've continued getting knocked out by the first big team we've faced

We did well against Germany in 2020 (although it could be argued we hit them at the right time) but in general it just seems no matter who's been in charge we've followed the same pattern with easier draws

Granted, it's an improvement on getting knocked out by Iceland and failing to qualify in 2008

DNA and a style of play is definitely something we don't really have.

But in this instance for me, TT had the opportunity to go for the jugular and didn't. It wasn't really anything to do with the players. He made a very poor decision tactically and that's what flipped the game.

Foden and Palmer would've been out of position or sat on the bench watching Bellingham be far better than them. TAA would've been helpful to have but the lack of backup right back didn't hinder us at crunch time.

Simply put Tuchel went too defensive too early and failed to change it when Argentina equalised. Making the correct decisions in those moments are why he's one of the highest paid international managers around and he fucked it up.

Can't fault the players for this it's all on Tuchel

Yeah I agree here. I don't think theres a real argument for leaving them at home. With the way TT set up in those last 30 mins, they wouldnt have had any impact in that moment.

Saka/Rashford on the bench were the pacey players that were needed.

I said it at the time but I wasn't too upset at them two being left out. Gibbs-White was the one for me that I was more surprised about. As you say, Palmer and Foden have done nothing for 95% of the season.

There was no reason that the players he had at his disposal couldn't have won that game on Wednesday.

I've had a think about it since the loss and think it was a bit of both.

In game management was abysmal and main cause of the loss. It was like watching Nuneaton Town if they go 1 nil up at Man City away in the cup. He just gave up any pretence of trying to play and loaded the defence to try to last for 40+ mins.

But I think the squad selection may have played a part here as he clearly didn't like the look of his back up midfield and attacking options. If he had Foden, Palmer, Wharton in his squad would he have made better subs?

Either way it's all on Tuchel. Needs sacking immediately

At a broad level I agree with this. We prioritise size over skill throughout the whole youth system.

However, at the very top level i.e. national squad, our squad was more than a match for Argentina, and used well should have won.

Agree we should look at Spain and France for how they've created such a wide pool of elite players

Southgate was passive. Tuchel actively went all out defence and basically waved them on to us

What disappointed me the most was that immediately he made the first substitution it became obvious it was a mistake yet instead of changing it and adding some pace he did nothing but make it worse. He had more than enough time to improve it but either couldn’t see it or didn’t want to and just ended up allowing us to fall behind then panicking with Rashford and Toney. Either way, he cost us that and should go.
