Synopsis

Nicky Curtis is one of the most highly decorated British soldiers ever to serve in Northern Ireland and in this compelling and unique book he graphically portrays his experiences in the Province during the turbulent years of 1969 - 76. Born into a Catholic family, the son of a miner and World War II veteran, Curtis was amongst some of the first troops to be sent to N.Ireland in 1969. Faith & Duty is a first-hand account of his experiences there, experiences that would change his life forever. After surviving nearly 2,000 fired rounds, Curtis's duty as a uniformed officer ended and he was awarded the Military Medal for acts of bravery in the field. But he returned to the Province to become a key figure in undercover operations, liaising closely with such figures as Captain Robert Nairac, himself a legend for his undercover work among the IRA. Hard-hitting, uncompromising and extraordinarily frank, Nicky Curtis's dramatic account of his life in N.Ireland is written with the raw emotion of a man who was actually there. It encompasses the extremities of urban civil war, the intrigues of undercover operations - and the political machinations that helped to form both. :good:

...and your recommendation would undoubtedly be The Satanic Verses?

Depends what you like...

But..

If you want a series of books to get into, full of plots, sub plots, twists and turns.

The daddy of them all... GEORGE RR MARTIN's - A song of Ice and Fire. (He's completed about 4 of the 7 book series) - honestly if you love reading, you wont put these down.

O try.

Stephen Donaldson - The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant.

David Gemmell - The Drenai Books - very basically written but a cracking read.

I have a horrid, deeply depressing confession to make on the subject.

In the last few months, I have read all the Andy McNab novels. I KNOW they are trash but the war mad little boy inside us all makes his stuff more addictive than crack.

Proper books - avoid anything by Sam Bourne. I have just finished reading "Aquariums of Pyongyang" by Kang Chol-Hwan. North Korea is just amazing.

Just read 'Stasiland' by Anna Funder which was excellent, if reading about the East German secret police interests you :)

Great book. On the GDR theme the film "Goodbye Lenin" is a cracking watch.

Not read owt for ages, but ended up purchasing "Guerilla Marketing". Apparently I'll be a millionaire when I'm finished reading it.

Oh, its the 4th edition for anyone wondering!

Proper books - avoid anything by Sam Bourne.

I'm halfway through the Last Testimant

Are you saying it's not worth finishing?

just read a book..... its a season following east stirling.

I wonder where he got the idea for that from?

I recommended "The Secret Hunters" by Ranulph Fiennes. I couldn't put it down. Very good. A sad ending though. Sure I got some dust in mi eye......

I seem to recall this got the thumbs up on Newsnight Review
