Guest Chris Posted October 23, 2007 Posted October 23, 2007 (edited) It is being reported that Gary Megson is now the first choice candidate for taking over as Manager. What i don't understand is, if Gartside likes him so much and thinks he will improve the club, why is he apponinting him NOW, and not after Allardyce left the club. Why appoint Sammy Lee, a person who is unproven at any management level, and not Gary Megson who is an experienced manager (but shitee) and was out of a job at the time? I have also read somewhere that when before Allardyce was given the job at Bolton, Gartsides first choice was Gary Megson but he turned down the oppertunity. Also, when Allardyce was being lined up for the England job, the replacement was Megson. SO why is he after Megson NOW, and why did he not appoint him when he was out of a job, and instead gave the job to an unproven manager, Sammy Lee. (Btw, im actually praying it is Coleman or Paul Ince now, not that ginger prick who i have just been talking about) To apoint Megson would be suicidal! Edited October 23, 2007 by Chris
Boothy Posted October 23, 2007 Posted October 23, 2007 'Cos he's incompetent at appointing managers. Like mentioned in another topic (by Carlos i think it was), it was pure luck that Allardyce turned out so good for us.

He's got 50% right so far - how do we know that the Lee appointment wasn't just bad luck as opposed to Allardyce being good luck? Why don't we reserve judgement for Gartside until after he appoints someone and see how they perform?
no balls Posted October 23, 2007 Posted October 23, 2007 Why don't we reserve judgement for Gartside until after he appoints someone and see how they perform? Eggsf?ckingzacerly!!
Casino Posted October 23, 2007 Posted October 23, 2007 aye, but the success was some fat oaf who he luckily got to break his contract and lead us to league finishes nobody could have expected i reckon allardyce was a dead easy choice
Boothy Posted October 23, 2007 Posted October 23, 2007 Personally, I don't think there is room for a mistake like Lee at the top level of football. Appointing a person who has yet to manage club football at a Premiership club is asking for trouble. It's all well and good Sammy Lee being a cracking player and a fair decent coach, but that doesn't qualify him to be a manager. By the way things are looking (Megson) it will soon be 33%. Either way, the whole debacle over the last year, all his decisions point at incompetence. I hope it was just bad luck putting an unproven manager in charge of world class like Anelka, Diouf etc.
jules_darby Posted October 23, 2007 Posted October 23, 2007 I hope it was just bad luck putting an unproven manager in charge of world class like Anelka, Diouf etc. But just good luck from the chairman in getting them signed (Anelka's extension in particular) and paying wages etc for them?
Boothy Posted October 23, 2007 Posted October 23, 2007 Fair enough. I would have preferred no extension and a decent table position rather than what's looking like almost certain relegation, but each to their own eh. Do think the fact that no 'top 4' clubs approached for Nico was a huge slice of luck as well, so yeah, your right.

The fact that no clubs came in for Anelka is irrelevant; he didn't have to sign a new deal and could've hung on like Haim did and it's good work to have got him signed up. Why can't you accept that?

So, we lose a manager we wanted to keep and get no compensation & even though he has 3 years left on his "contract", who then broke a "gentlemans" agreement not to take any backroom staff, but are willing to pay compensation to a club for a manager without a contract. No wonder we are in trouble!

Because that type of arrangement has worked how many times? Not flippin many outside of the Liverpool boot room. And that was hardly a tough job. Fact remains we should've got a proper manager in the summer. The sheer predictability of what's gone on gets me most of all.
Mounts Kipper Posted October 24, 2007 Posted October 24, 2007 (edited) The only reason we would appoint Megson is because no one else would be interested with the lack of funds and possible departure of our best players in january, that is also most likely the reason souness decided to walk away after being interviewed for the post. You're right Mounts and it's SO annoying We would have been an attractive proposition in the summer if we'd done the right thing and taken our time to find the man we wanted
jimmyjoojar Posted October 24, 2007 Posted October 24, 2007 The only reason we would appoint Megson is because no one else would be interested with the lack of funds and possible departure of our best players in january, that is also most likely the reason souness decided to walk away after being interviewed for the post. Or that Souness was concerned that the man who was party to discussions he had with Gartside is also a man who represents Gary Megson.....
magic legs Posted October 24, 2007 Posted October 24, 2007 Guardian implies that Souey wanted the job but when he found out Gartside preferred Megson it somehat underwhlemed him!
