They breathe football up there (well there's nowt else to do)

Another myth. As fickle, if not more so, than any other area in the country.

They certainly became fickle in 1979 when they had a home gate of 7,134 for a league game against Wrexham

"The average attendance dropped to just above 20,000; the worst figure since the end of World War 2 and the last match against Wrexham attracted only 7,134 spectators; the lowest crowd of the Century".

I've seen about 1,000 Sunderland turn up for a meaninglessly crap Anglo Italian game on a tuesday night in the filthiest weather EVER and stand on the open embankment, singing non stop for 90 minutes

That may not sound it, but it was flippin impressive to me

Permanently pissed that lot, like the jocks.

I remember that.

There was also one lone drunken Mackem who walked along the Burnden Paddock looking up and shouting 'If you hate Newcatle clap your hands'.

The bloke looked like a proper loon. He spent the rest of the game stood on his own shouting for Sunlun, nobody went near him.

I'm talking about their away fans.

The WHU fan will argue as he probably thinks one of the London clubs make the most noise...... :::::lol:::::

Remember the Mackems at the Reebok when we were both chasing promotion in the late 90's - they sang 'There's Only One Mickey Bridges' loud enough to lift the roof off.....saying that Burnley were impressive on the first game of the season a few years back too.

Who said Liverpool were good away from home?! You must be an ex-Liverpool fan.....they're as sh?te as Arsenal fans.

Posted

Liverpool are sh?te.

Pablo's lot and Pompey can be good, but have had a couple of disappointing turn-outs in the last few years.

Hate to say it but Wanky Wolves were very good when they beat us in the FA cup at the Reebok.

Stoke at Burnden in one of their promotion years were something else. About 91 I think. Must have brought about 8000.

How times change.

Difficult one for me because I'm sure the London teams playing at UP are noisier there than they are at the Reebok. Bound to be with it being a London Derby.

I would say the noisiest away fans (over a period of say 20 years) at UP would be Citeh, Man Utd, or Chelsea. Those 3 always bring numbers and are usually noisy even when losing.

Teams like Everton, Birmingham, Newcastle, and Sunderland can be noisy when they're winning. However, they can often be silent and/or not bring numbers down.

The game where Jules scored and did a roly-poly?

They were cheering us on as they were already promoted and didn't want Vale to go up

They certainly were, very funny on reflection

But as a relatively young un, it baffled me momentarily, we scored and the whole embankment erupted !

Vintage promotion battle that one, so was the one when we got edged out but lost the playoffs to Tranmere, those 46 game seaons are something else

I remember us going past Gypsy's tent in a taxi for that Stoke game....there were f?cking loads of big skinheads outside it.

Got in the ground and the whole place was belting out 'we are going up - we are going up'.

Atmopshere was electric.

i sit west stand lower in the corner, right next to the away fans. i love it when there are aways fans right next to me as there are lots of fans who react to songs which they sing and its great when we score and can torment them haha. i think the atomosphere i better went there is away support in the lower teir - its not so good looking at empty seats when they are not there!!!!

Wonder if we'd get the same atmoshere at the Reebok, if we were going up from League 1 to the championship? <_<

Would we fook.

It's a myth that Geordies and Mackems always turn out at away games too:

palermovnewcastlezu2.jpg

Newcastle at Palermo

West Ham at Palermo.

Not attempting to big up my team, just showing a comparison and demonstrating they don't always take numbers wherever they go.

All agreed. The point still stands though. They don't always turn out. People believe this myth that they sell out everywhere - they've not sold their allocation at The Boleyn on a number of occasions.

aye, agree on that

for me

from what I've seen at the Reebok, and on SKY taking into account kick off times, tv coverage etc, the one team that surprise me with the numbers they bring are Arsenal - consistently good numbers
