Weekend Break

Featured Replies

I'm looking for a weekend break, somewhere hot and relaxed for mid July. Beach preferable, however don't want a typical Brits abroad place (Magaluf, Benidorm etc etc).

Thinking South Spain, South France but basically looking for ideas / recommendations?

If you're ruling out Brits on the Piss and chips for breakfast, then get your wallet out because you've missed the boat with good airfairs. Plus, anywhere will be busy so again, move on.

That aside, I'd recommend Nice; crackin place, loads going on, plenty to see and do. The old town has some beltin bars and restaurants, good nightlife. Dogshit city though. 30 minute or so day trip on the bus or train to either Monaco or Cannes (overrated) is an option. I've been quite a few times and would go again tomorrow.

If you can get a hotel anywhere near the Promenade des Anglais then your laughin. Or better still, splash out and go to The Negresco, (where i gave Doris her eternity ring, the romantic bugger that I am).

Alternativly, Peurto Banus, but at that time of the year its proper-chocka and most of the decent accomodation is rented apartments. There are a couple of good hotels but they are very expensive. You could get a cheaper one a few miles away but if its a weekend thing I wouldnt bother.

Estepona (down the road) is OK, but you feel like you;re missing out on the big party next door to be honest. If you fancy this area, conisder flying into Gib instead of Malaga, not much difference in distance away.

The rest of Southern Spain is pisshead central, good for the lads, shite for owt else.

Pretty sure the only way to Gib now is from Luton/Gatwick?

He could do Jerez (Monarch fly from Manc) and stay on the Costa de la Luz which although having plenty of Brits is much quieter than the CDS.

EDIT - Monarch do fly to Gib but from Sept 08 and have stopped Jerez. Must go and see my folks!

Bordeaux is an excellent city. It's set in a beautiful part of France, also get yourself down to Biarritz.

Don't worry. For every millionaire there is a pleb in a Burnley shirt on a day trip from Benalmadina. Along the marina there are Armani and D&G shops, next door to 1 euro holiday tat shops. Strange combination.

Even though its full of Russian billionaires, they still have not got out of the habit of cutting their own hair and still think the sandal/sock combination is a winner.

Price wise, if you want egg and chips for ten bob, wrong place, if you want a good meal next to the marina for ?20 a mon, then you'll be fine.

On the marina front you have lots of restauraunts and cafes, there is a strip at the back where the bars are, but unless its happy hour you'll do well to get arseholed for ?100. Its become a bit of a poshmons stag do / hen party place too which is one of the reasons we don't go to often now, but dont let that put you off, you can still enjoy it.

I'd definatly recommend it.

Some of the other places along the Cote D'Azur are nice - Frejus, St Raphael, St Aygulf etc are all good and nowhere near as expensive as Nice,Monaco or Cannes (Still more expensive than the Costas though) <_< And you won't see any Burnley shirts :yahoo:

Not sure if its been mentioned before but Dubrovnik is a cracking place, especially with the missus. Though at that time of year it will be busy, but then everywhere will.

Could get yourself a motor and spend a few days along the Dalmatian coast, very beautiful and will get yourself away from the crowds.

DCI - have a look at Carcassonne too, thats a great city for a couple of days as a couple. Well worth a visit.

Cheap flights (easyjet or ryanair , cant remember, but from Liverpool) so long as there is no Super League teams playing Catalans that weekend.

Monte Carlo...............Class.

Get the helicopter transer from Nice airport...............You'll be smashing her back gates in after 10 mins
