Correct, and because the game is now so different. The passion has left the game, not just from the players, but from the fans as well. Back then, we could relate with the players, and sometimes meet them in town after a game (everybody had a drink with McGinley) - now if you fo anywhere near a player, they'll get their "minders" (hangers on) to give you a good beating. Modern day players are now pretty much a bunch of cnuts who don't give a toss about the club they play for or the fans.

While I dont disagree with those sentiments, I'm not sure its the main reason we'd not take 4k to a night match at Arsenal now. After all, we took that many to night matches in Marseille and Munich and Guimaraes, and getting on towards that number to might games by the Black Sea and in Madrid.

The real problem now is that familiarity breeds contempt. Back then we were on the up from the real depths, and going to Arsenal was an amazing novelty and an amazing confirmation of how far we'd come. We do it every year now. UEFA proved that, when roused, Bolton can have a fantastic travelling support that rivals all but a few terms of numbers, and anyone in terms of enjoyment and supidity*. Trouble is, we aint roused very often. UEFA was our footballing Viagra.

Spot on. And back in the day all the players weren't your best mate too. Branagan and Thompson used to drink in my local, one was a decent bloke and the other, mentioning no names, was a snide Geordie sh~thouse.

Had a conversation with Dave Higson who wasn't allowed to film so he'd decided to watch from the terrace which had bushes. Some ted loon sailor who wasn't even a Bolton fan tried to attack their goalkeeper and ended up getting a belt.

 

Only season I've ever been to every match. The turn out at Belgrade took me back as it was just proper ale barons with no marmite drillers

 

And you could stand up and smoke on the terrace

Apart from those that turned up on the cindy day flight who had to be guarded by riot police in a hotel to prevent them from attempting to bum the proper moonmen who'd turned up the day before and were'nt scared

Walkers 3rd goal is one of my favourite Bolton goals of all time. It was a pure "Just look at his face moment". I think there were times he did'nt believe he'd come back from his injury & the smile across his face I don't think there was a wider one on any of ours.

Normal folk with normal lives who used to spend their Saturday afternoons in M&S with the wife don't often relish the thought of a midweek trip 200 miles away, getting home at god knows what time.

 

To many of those who have lost faith, that was the appealling bit becuase it meant a day and night on the lash with the lads.
