Bolton Wanderers With A M Postcode!

Recommended Posts

since greater manchester council no longer exists, there isn't a true county of greater manchester

all the boroughs are unitary authorities

you claim to be passionate about it, but accept the term 'greater manchester'

well, i don't

born in lancashire, live in lancashire

I do not accept Greater Manchester at all and I always say Lancashire - remember Bolton Wanderers are The PRIDE of Lancashire!

But the county of Greater Manchester has never been abolished so it still exists, unfortunately (although the council doesn't - remember a council does not make a county but its a political tool by all governments.).

But the mancunianism doesn't stop with the post office as we have

GM Fire

GM Ambulance

GM Police

GMITA (Formerly GMPTA)

GMPTE

AGMA (Association of Greater Manchester Authorities)

First Manchester (at least we have Arriva Liverpool in Bolton!!!)

do you now see a pattern

"greater Manchester" was ablished 1986.

Lancashire has existed for 600 years, "greater" Manchester for 12, but the BBC insist on calling it "greater" Manchester, which helps promulgate the myth.

Bolton is Lancashire.

Am I correct in thinking that the actual Counties of Britain did'nt really change much anyway when all these metropolitan boroughs were set up? It was just a council organisation thing, a bit like how Humberside was formed fom East Yorkshire, and we had Gtr Manc, Mersyside, etc?

Now all we need is Smiffs to tell us all how the government wasted loads of our hard earned on stupid fucking boundary changes in the first place! (not that I will be disagreeing by the way, next they will be twinning Adlington with fucking Chamonix...

All of this post is correct.

Reginald Maudling was to attend a Local Govt Conference. He didn't have an agenda, so created the local govt reorganisaton of 1974.

Dutchwhite; welcome, but you are wrong.

Greater Manchester County Council was abolished in 1986, and so its districts (the metropolitan boroughs) are now effectively unitary authority areas; however, the metropolitan county, which is some 496 square miles (1,285 km2), continues to exist in law and as a geographic frame of reference. Several county-wide services are co-ordinated through the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities.

Thank you for your welcome, boltondiver.

Unfortunately there is a lot of confusion with regards to County Councils and actual Counties hence why so many people believe that Greater Manchester was abolished when it wasn't.

Its even more interesting to know that Blackpool and Blackburn with Darwen do not come under Lancashire County Council authority and are unitary authorities, within their own right, but still part of the County of Lancashire! Same, also, for Warrington still being part of County of Cheshire but a unitarian authority and NOT controlled by Cheshire County Council!

To be honest the sooner the County of Greater Manchester gets abolished the better and give the MBC back to their original counties whether that be Lancashire, Cheshire or even Derbyshire.

because all 10 towns/cities in these groups doing their own thing would work wonderfully well!

i thought it was the postmark going and not the Postcode

so we'll still all have our BL postcodes just the little stamp at the top of the letter will say manchester and not bolton as that's where it was processed. And you will still live in Bolton Lancashire (BL) so your postcode will stay the same.

And people say the scousers are easily upset

the money Bolton get's now would be dramatically cut if it left AGMA and went to Lancashire.

AGMA is just a strategy group of the 10 councils that used to be in Greater Manchester.

AGMA has no control over what local councils do it's just for sharing of information and for strategic stuff

To be honest the sooner the County of Greater Manchester gets abolished the better and give the MBC back to their original counties whether that be Lancashire, Cheshire or even Derbyshire.

Here's the thing:

Because they were created, then abolished, one or two new identities were "crystallised"

For example, "Merseyside"; a non-county if there ever was, as Liverpool is a part of Lancashire and certainly Wirral doesn't want to be associated with Liverpool.

But, as a liberal, if people in that area feel "Merseysiders" then good luck to them.

So, out of the confusion, I feel there is a "County of Choice", which for us is Lancashire.

Funny, up in Saddleworth, much of which is Yorkshire, but then became "greater" Manchester, so many people now, trying to be correct, call it Lancashire. Gets em going!!

My prospective MP wrote to me and mentioned the offensive "greater" Manchester term.

I emailed her back and asked her cease using that phrase with immediate effect and also enquired as to why she would want to offend us Lancastrians.

She apologised and hasn't used it since with me.

She is a good listener, unlike the present incumbent, and I feel would respond to the request for abolition. After all, "north humberside" has now disappeared.

Political pressure is what is needed, and pressure on the BBC. I hate it when they say "Lancashire Cricket Club".

Funny how they can be politically correct in using Beijing or Mumbai, but will not use the correct "Lancashire" rather than gm.

I wouldn't ditch GM Police etc, because that would be another waste of our money.

According to Monday's Manchester Evening News its not just the postmark but also the post code thats changing. (same goes with the SK and OM postcodes)

Also, legally speaking, Bolton is the there ceremonial County of Greater Manchester and NOT Lancashire, unfortunately.

Do not forget that Blackburn is in the Ceremonial County Lancashire but is NOT governed by the bureaucrats in Lancaster but govern themselves - same with Blackpool and they are both very self sufficient and prosperous - I am sure Bolton could be the same if we left AGMA and GM and became part of the Ceremonial County of Lancashire.

AGMA has no control - sure only trying to force the C-Charge on to us and they would have had full controll of all monies coming from C-Charge. Funnily enough the city with most members in AGMA is Manchestera nd guess where most of the money was going to go and guess which part of GM would have benefitted the most from the C-Charge - definitely no Bolton!

BOLTON IS NOT GOVERNED BY MANCHESTER!!!

Blackburn has lancs police and lancs fire service etc the same way bolton has GM police and fire.

AGMA is a group of councillors and officers from the 10 councils who meet and sort out strategy for the area it's not a case of 9 of them turning up at Manchester Town hall and being told by Richard Leese what they're going to do.

you didn't have to pay to get into Bolton though!

The C-charge was forced on AGMA by the government.

AGMA/GMITA went to central government asking for money to improve public transport in the area and was to by the government yes but only if you pay for it with a congestion charge

from Mondays MEN

The Bolton, Oldham and Stockport postmarks will disappear and all mail will be stamped with a Manchester postmark.

However, the BL (Bolton), OL (Oldham) and SK (Stockport) postcodes will still be used.

Are you sure about that?

Blackburn does not have anything like AGMA and guess what - it is now starting to bring more money into their town, that what Bolton does through AGMA.

AGMA is a concrete neckless around Bolton's neck. We do not have full independence to do our own thing and have to go with the majority rule through AGMA. We are uniquely different to many parts of GM (same can be said for Wigan MBC as well! We are not direct neighbours to Manchester unlike the most of other MBC's in Manchester and as such we do have our own identity which is being stifled by AGMA.

I can guarantee that if we were independent, like BLackburn, then Bolton, as a town, would not be in such a mess as it is now.

That is from the website, but in the printed version (which is easily available at all good libraries and even the MEN offices in Manchester), and I have a copy in front of me as I write - it categorically advises that the postcodes ARE going to be replaced by an M postcode.

As to why the website and the printed version (which is a hardcopy and as such more accountable than a web version) differ is unkown and possibly only the MEN can advise why.

perhaps they've corrected the wrong paper copy in a later edition and on the website?

C-Charge, I agree was forced onto GREATER MANCHESTER by the government. AGMA decided to take control of the C-Charge as it would be considered a county-wide Charge. (by the way it was GMPTA and not GMITA - GMITA different body, which replaced GMPTA, due to different legisaltion that was intoduced in December last year!).

Voting by the populous was not part of AGMA's remit until the very last minute (due to a number of councils saying no and Bolton going to vote). If the vote had not gone ahead the C-Charge would have been steam-rolled into place. BUt what concrete improvements to public transport would there have been in Bolton. Not many - yes various cosmetic improvements to stations and create a bus lane all the way into Manchester, along Manchester Road. In fact the bus route I live on - 95, would have been curtailed to operate between Bolton and Little Lever only - what good is that. Another fact that the GMITA were using the bus and rail network model of now rather than investiagtiong properly as to what was required - how is that benefitting Bolton whehn public transport is on the verge of collapse by the transport comapnies. (even now the 95 is on a 3 month stay of execution because First want to withdraw from it and replace it with nothing!) But the greater improvemenst to public transport was in Manchester itself - how could that have benefitted Bolton

It was the City Final edition I have got - so how can a later edition be corrected.

If takjen to court the papaer version has more of a standing than the web version as it is a HARD-copy

AGMA is very much a non-US socialist model (i.e. very akin to communism but also believes in hierarchy and greed) in that money from each council goes into 1 pot and then gets divided amongst the councils for various strategies. Funnily enough Manchester gets the most money - why????

IF we were not part of that then the money could be used more wisely within the borough boundaries.

it's bigger?

More people live there?

More people work there?

It puts more into the pot?

Surely the fact the smaller councils in AGMA went against the will of manchester shows it works?

I've yet to find anything done in bolton becasue AGMA told us to. if you can find something that AGMA has forced Bolton into then i might take your ramblings seriously.

Why would someone use an article in the MEN of all places as evidence in court?

It's no good

I've tried really hard to give a sh1t but have failed miserably.

They can change the postcode to M, P, Q or TWATARMS for me and I doubt I'd even notice.

I'm a Lancastrian, the Queen is my Duke and that's good enough for me.

from the AGMA site

Other local authorities or joint committees from outside Greater Manchester may also become associate members, subject to the agreement of the Board. Blackburn with Darwen, Blackpool and Warrington Councils currently have this status.

Anyone got a link to this story? I saw an article a couple of weeks ago in the BN about the change to the postmark as a result of Farnworth closing. I mis-read the story and thought the postcode was changing. I run a business and was concerned about the cost this would have to change stationary etc and spoke to the Royal Mail - they advised me that there was no plans to change the postcode, only the postmark.

Those in the printing game could make a small fortune on the back of a postcode change.

Until I read your post I was dead against the change of postcode from BL to M.

But now, I'm warming to the idea!!!!!
