What Got You Watching Bolton?

My Dad first took me as a little 'un sometime in the mid 60's. Massive footy fan was the old fella, so he wasn't averse to taking me to other North West grounds if we were playing miles away. He'd take me to Man U, Citeh,Bury,Everton,Blackburn etc - but our first love was always for our own town team.

So, it seems safe to say that this affliction we have is handed down through family generations. I wonder if this is why my lad had the club emblem tattooed on his bicep at 14 years old :D

My dad starting taking me to Burnden in 1990 when I was 9. Happiest days of my life.

First game i wemt to was Wrexham away in 88/89 with me dad!

first real proper memory was Tranmere playoff final 91

Mum took me and my brother to a couple of night matches towards the end of the (I think) 72/73 season. Started selling the old tear open bingo cards round the houses and at school to get the complimentary tickets in about 75.

My uncle took me to my first game when I was about 11 or 12, it was against Preston when we went got into the automatic spot I think. Then my dad started to take me regularly the following season then we got a season ticket in Manny Road till we moved to the Bok.

Sounds very similar to my old man - he's from Stockport and has no affinity with Bolton as a town at all, but in the 60's as soon as he could drive, him and my uncle used to go to all the North-West grounds - he fell in love with Burnden and BWFC and went ever since...

He took me since the ealy 80's, but we got my 1st ST in 89 and my main memories come from then onwards

I didnt have any choice in the matter, started going when I was about 8 with my Uncle John, Zozzy, Packi and Ferny etc, remember getting my 1st kit, the away red one from about 87, made by umbro, it was about 5 sizes too big but the smallest one they did.

1st game i went to we lost at home against Brentford 0-1 would have been around 1989 ish

I think with where we are geography wise and the fact we have two of the most successful clubs in Europe within 30 miles of us (obviously one of them a bit closer than that), the support has to be passed down the generations to a certain extent, especially now with every Big Four game on Sky.

Bolty, it is character building (although at the time, with a load of twats who have never been near Old Trafford giving you grief it didn't seem character building) but that's what made the European nights special. I'm too young to remember the Div 4 days, but even I remember us losing at home in the league to Exeter (Gerry Peyton was in net, for anyone who cares), so for the older lads and lasses on here it must have been doubly special.

In short, I love it :)

Started going regular in '77/78 with a mate and his dad, it just grips you and won't let go. We both still go, with our own kids now. Bolty talks about character building, it certainly is, but I suppose that's what makes us better than all the sheep following the reds from either end of the East Lancs.

My dad used to go misty eyed talking about Lofty et al, he was on the embankment on disaster day, he always counted himself lucky that he was in early that day and was stood near to the Burnden Paddock, away from where the crush was.

Exactly! All my mates at school were United fans and I could quite easily have followed. The fact that none of them had actually ever been anywhere near OT and that I had experienced the real thing at Burnden, made me feel slightly superior to the plastic mancs and, if I'm honest, still does! ^_^

Same at my school, when i was at primary school everyone supported Liverpool, (none had a scouse accent or any connection to Liverpool), then when i started secondry in 93, everyone followed the Munichs, over the last few years i have spotted loads of kids wearing Chelski tops, it wont never change

Dad took me when I was 6 (early 90s) because he didn't want me to follow the rest of Tyldesley (bar a few honourable exceptions) and become a fan of that lot from Stretford. It wasn't fun at school the day after we got beaten 6-0 I'll tell thee

Your telling me! I had about 3 or 4 fights the day after that in school!

My dad got me into watching Bolton, took me to my first game about 89/90 and ive been hooked ever since. How good was Burnden park? Every fucker dreaded playing us there :yahoo:

The debut game of Gareth Williams by any chance? If so, I remember it well. We won 2-0 and the rain was that bad, the ball was aquaplaning. Luckily, I was nice and dry in the Lever End.
