What Got You Watching Bolton?

Prior to watching Swinton Rugby with my dad in 64, i used to see an LUT match bus parked up on Princes Ave in Blackmoor heading for Burnden for the game. I decided to ditch the rugby one day, and jumped on the bus. It was Bolton V Citeh, what a great baptism for an eleven year old kid, owt on his own in November 65.

Jack :D The old man, loved it since day 1 :yahoo:

My Dad took me to Burnden for the first time in 94.

My first proper memory was Reading in the play off final. :good:

Listening to the big lads on Athy Park in the late 70's and early 80's as a kid and thinking 'well, that sounds fun'.

Jack showed me that picture of him when he was only a lad crying outside Wembley after the Bolton V Blackpool game, i bet he never saw Ruth that day.

My Nan.

Mun and Dad had no interest in football whatsoever.

My gran's sister lived on Bromwich St (Smiley knows her IIRC) and her back garden backed onto the training pitch. I used to watch them train there in the mid 70's and that got me watching them.

A combination of mates from school and an altercation on the Stretford End aged 11 that I didn't win and still get angry about to this day.

me mum n dad, april/may 1973

Got free tickets as a kid at Primary school, was a neet match and Reeves scored a cracker late on to win the game, hooked since :drinks:

Same age, same year! 3 or 4 of us used to go ten pin bowling in Walkden on a Saturday and for a change went to Burnden for the last match of the previous season. The Bowling never got a look-in from then onwards!

Used to get the 18 up to Walkden from Astley, then the 83 to Station Rd Swinton. Always had a soft spot for the Lions.

92/93 liveing alone again.... you no the type he was a loner..... started drinking with MG WHITES and started going with him once or twice with dad in the late 70,s

My mates dad (god rest his soul) took us to burnden, via his pie factory in golbourne, back in 67/68 played the mackems I think. Sat in manny road stand listening to the lever end and was caught hook line and sinker.

Th'owd chap and me grandad used to get all emotional talking about Nats exploits and then me grandad would be off on about Willie Moir and no end of other old Bolton greats. Grandmother used to be as bad and told me stories of disaster day.

Only a matter of time til the fateful day me dad took me to my first game. For some reason, I always think it was Wolves. Stood on the Embankment and the only word I can use to describe the experience is 'enthralled'.

Forgot to add - 63/64 season.

Does anyone remember folk throwing those large oil drums over the wall at the top of the embankment and them rolling down the terrace, skittling away fans?

Its a blast from the past memory from the aforementioned Athy Park.

Dad took me when I was 6 (early 90s) because he didn't want me to follow the rest of Tyldesley (bar a few honourable exceptions) and become a fan of that lot from Stretford. It wasn't fun at school the day after we got beaten 6-0 I'll tell thee

Maybe, but it is character building.

Started going regular in '77/78 with a mate and his dad, it just grips you and won't let go. We both still go, with our own kids now. Bolty talks about character building, it certainly is, but I suppose that's what makes us better than all the sheep following the reds from either end of the East Lancs.

My dad used to go misty eyed talking about Lofty et al, he was on the embankment on disaster day, he always counted himself lucky that he was in early that day and was stood near to the Burnden Paddock, away from where the crush was.

My brothers are very passionate fans and would tell me bedtime storys about the trouble on Manny Road and Johnny

Byrom etc. Anyhow i used to babysit my two nephews when i was 8 and my treat was taken to the match by my brother-

in-law and stand on the Embankment. I remember looking at the crowd and thinking 'these are my townfolk' :good:

Absolutly loved it :good:

First went to Burnden in the late fifties, early sixties with the old man. Fist game I remember was a 0-1 loss to Chelski, we had Hoppy in goal and I watched the game from the Embankment. Dad was staunch Bolton so it was only logical I followed in his footsteps. He liked a pint too did my old man and so made a perfect role model.

Step brothers took me, 73/74 season. Can't remember who we played (alcohol really does kill your brain cells), but we stood under the scoreboard on th'embankment.

My Dad first took me as a little 'un sometime in the mid 60's. Massive footy fan was the old fella, so he wasn't averse to taking me to other North West grounds if we were playing miles away. He'd take me to Man U, Citeh,Bury,Everton,Blackburn etc - but our first love was always for our own town team.
