Megson Vs Allardyce The Evidence

Featured Replies

I've seen many discussions on this board about the similarities in play between Bolton under Megson & Bolton under Allardyce. Yesterday gave the perfect example of the difference despite people trying to argue there is not much difference

Allardyce organises teams to keep clean sheets, Megson doesn't

Allardyce has a couple of players with a bit of class who can makes a difference or create a goal from nothing (Dunn, Diuof) Megson doesn't.

Allardyce can motivate his players in big games , Megson can't

End of story , get him out. Anyone else in , it really doesn't matter who as long as it's not Megson.

I really don't understand this thinking.

Fuck it. Advertise it in the Job centre in Bolton......we can take a punt on someone.

How about me? The first woman manager in the Premiership?

You are right.Megson tries to keep clean sheets but doesn't know how to.And doesn't have confidence in players who can make a difference.Muamba/McCann as a central midfield was a cowardly kop out that deserved to lose.

You could see why Allardyce tried to sign Dunn when he was Bolton manager

So Sam did a better job than Megson and from that your conclusion is that my next door neighbours binman is better than Megson.

So when i get home for tea tonight and rather than my favourite...curry... i get offered salmon i should just eat soil instead.

No Balls, I think Susan Boyle could do a better job than Megson so why not.

Sumo, no offence like, but do you watch reality tv?

I agree the conclusion drifts off from the original point somewhat. Just got a bit carried away. As long as I don't see anyone else saying Megson is doing the same job as Big Sam , the rest you can put down as a rant.

only when Bolton are live on TV so I don't have to watch the match.

Cant compare Megson to Allardyce because football has changed, its much harder to suceed now with the many millions of pounds other clubs have against us. I agree Megson is on the verge though, if we dont improve performance wise at least vs Fulham he should go imo.

but I am comparing like for like Megson with Allardyce

Allardyce's Blackburn in 2009 vs Megson's Bolton in 2009

both spent similar amount of money

'kin 'ell Ani, you sound like yon mon off Kung Fu wi ping pong ball eyes.

Why is it harder to compete now than when BSA was in charge? I dont buy into this argument. The best players play for the teams who pay the best wages and this has always been the case. BSA faced the same problems he just came up with a succesfull formula to answer those problems.

Blackburn finished 2 places below us last season. You cant really judge halfway through because things can change before end of season.

P.S Allardyce didnt sign Dunn for Blackburn,

I know he didn't sign him but he's turned him from a fat layabout into one of the divisions leading goalscorers , he's always had talent, he now has a manager who knows how to get the best out of him.

Megson would have had him playing left back , then slagged him off after the game for not defending set pieces correctly. After which he'd have dropped him to the reserves sold him & bought some form of a cart horse for the same price instead.

I can just imagine the first training session:

NB: Right lads, get out on that pitch. All the practise balls are out there already; Jussi - Fred's got the temporary goals set up, you know the drill. Cones are out - Matty, use them for that set piece work we talked about yesterday. Run three sets of pairs, alternating as per that Pro-zone readout I passed round to everyone. Remember, I want high cardiac velocity for 5 minutes spells from all of you, followed by slow jogging; the stopwatch doesn't lie lads. Err...Kevin, can I have a word.

KD: Yes, boss.

NB: Not out here.

KD: Why - is it confidential news from Eddie.

NB: Err, ah yes, that's it.

KD: Hush hush like?

NB: Aye, summat like that - best not be overheard, so why not go in for a really good long hot shower and I'll lock up from the inside, stop anyone listening in. How's that groin problem coming on - I can check it out while we're at it...

He almost signed Dunn for Bolton though.

He almost signed Dunn for Bolton though.

Weve almost signed Van der Saar, Hasselbaink and loads of others. That doesnt mean shit.

What a load of spunk dribble. Hes been injured for ages, all he did was get fit again.

Nail on the head

Preachers of "expectation levels" & "careful what you wish for" we've done it before (consistent top half finishes and winning football on a relative shoestring) we CAN do it again with a more talented manager - BSA is not the be all and end all there are others out there who can do it

Allardyce was unique in the sense he developed into the transfer market that no one else tried before, but now that most clubs can do this now and offer better wages means the pool we fish in now is sparse, so it isnt as easy as saying well weve done it before we can do it again!

Yes that is a valid point to an extent but I dont think the goal posts have moved that much that we couldnt do it again unless I am missing something I don't know for a fact but I don't think our wage bill has been slashed dramatically in Megsons tenure and I know the transfer budget seems unchanged - the point I am making is that managerial talent is the key differencial from about 6th place down - with more talent in that department we cold get back to former glories it wasn't just a flash in the pan.

Are we not living former glories being inthe top flight, is that not enough

No longer is there players the standard of Djorkaeff, Okocha, Campo etc available on free transfers. That was a niche in the market that doesnt exist anymore. Allardyce wont get Blackburn as high as we got simple as that.
