Adlington

Featured Replies

For some reason known only to god, my mate has hired a barge for his birthday shindig on Saturday. Apparently we disembark at Adlington. Is it worth a night out there or should we get a cab back to Bolton and carry on there?

a few decent pubs there, top spinners is all right (3d sky pub as well if your interested in that malarkey), decent curry house on the a6, sharzu I think it is called. but everything shuts relatively early. Worth it for a couple of cheap beers but then i would jump on the train to Bolton or Manc as it gets later on.

Get upto Chorley and head to Slapper Jacks

will you not be half cut and heading for a balti house by the time you get off the barge?

I thought the canal was closed for boats because of the lack of water?

EDIT: from the 2nd August!

I should think that's highly likely! Thanks for the advice. Curry house and a few locals sounds in order. What's Slapper Jack's Danny? Sounds promising (at least the slapper part)....

Not been since I was 17, but used to always come home with smelly fingers!!

My mate got a knife held to his throat while we were waiting in the queue for AppleJacks about 10 years ago. The bastards wanted his shoes because one of them had been refused entry for wearing trainers. All this was in full view of the bouncers.

Anyway, there were 5 of them and only 3 of us, so my mate gave up his shoes and, unbelievably, the lad gave him his trainers in return, then the cunts went to the back of the queue and waited in line as though nothing had happened. Slightly shocked and very pissed off by what had occurred, we left the queue at this point, and the bouncer beckoned us over and told us to wait round the corner. When the cheeky shoe-robbing bastard got to the door, the bouncer relieved him of his knife, butted him in the face, then threw him round the corner and shouted "Here's your shoes back lad!". My mate proceeded to kick seven shades of shit out of the knob with his own trainers, before swapping them back.

Nothing to do with Adlington, and Applejacks is a shithole so I suggest you avoid it, but the mention of it brought back memories.

Dont you just love stories like that... I hope he suffered big time

Did anyone on here, ever go on the Lady Mary from Weelton Locks? It used to be a regular/annual trip for us Hicks lads in the late 70's.

(For those who dont know, it was a barge that used to hold Stag do's with a couple of strippers and a porno film thrown in. It used to sale about 100 yeards into a 'basin' so that it couldn't be raided by the police! Well thats what they told us)

To keep the thread on track, I used to live in Adlington and the Elephant and Castle used to be a good night out but I left in 1980 so it may have changed since. hope that helps.

Been once. Was in the queue and a riot van was parked outside. Soon escorted out of the club were two of Chorley's finest.

Undeterred, went in, some girl was giving it come back to mine but her arse was large and the two kids that cropped up in conversation didnt appeal for the breakfast.

So yep full of nutters and easy women.

If you are getting off at the canal, head first to the Bottom Spinners on the A6. Good variety of ales in there. Then head up to Adlington's finest, the Top Spinners. Nearly everyone in there is a Bolton follower (not like that should have any bearing on your night, just thought I'd slip it in though!). The latest serving pub is The Bridge down the bottom end (turn right at the co-op then over the canal bridge). You can get a beer in there till gone 1am. White Bear is ok as well. Do not even consider the Elephant and Castle though, dog rough place. One of them pubs where if you are not a regular you will feel the eyes glaring at you.

If you do go through to Chorley, Applejacks/Slapperjacks/AJ's always seems a good idea when you're pissed, but I can guarantee you will leave after half an hour when you realise its full of under age drinkers or 45+ year olds. Go to The Imperial instead that is near the Flat Iron car park.

Drink in the Top Spinners, and stay all night if you have to.

Friendly place, and full of Bolton fans. :good:

I think that might be the best thing I've ever read on here.

That is brilliant.

That is brilliant.

Indeed :good:

Back to the question at hand though - and the answer is "almost certainly"; by all accounts she likes nothing better than to get a few dozen lengths in before breakfast

Can highly recommend The Bistro for a good meal, will need to book in advance as it can get quite busy on a Fri/Sat.

Well, was it a good do?

Well, was it a good do?

It was bloody marvellous. Got to Adlington at about half 9 and had a quick lesson in bargemanship before setting off at 9.45 which is when the drinking began.

Weather was shite during the morning - but there is plenty of cover unless your steering. Stopped at 2 or three pubs on the way up the canal until we ended up at the Top Lock (great food - good beers - raspberry cider is the future).

Went back the way we came in the afternoon, the weather had cheered up a bit and we moved from beer to spirits! Arrived back in Adlington at 6 thoroughly oiled. Dropped off the barge.

First pub we went in was Bottom Spinners I think, then we moved to the next one up who's name escapes me but had a good pool table and a kids playground in the back? Then down to the Bridge where it was kicking off from the moment we arrived. Nowt to do with us though.

Eventually got the train back to Bolton, headed to the Casino and then for some reason to The Griffin where I ended the night with double vodka and cokes at a very competative ?2.30.

Back home for a respectable 1.30am after an Allen's Fried Chicken.

Quality day out despite the weather. Thanks for all your advice. Can recommend it if anybody fances doing something a bit different. There were 8 of us and it cost ?16.50 all in plus a fiver each for the deposit.

  • 2 months later...

I'm going on one of these Barge do's on the 11th of Nov for the afternoon, do they have life jackets as someone will be going in!!!

Is the ale reasonably priced?

I think we are off to Atherton at nite, some shithole called Morgans :drinks:
