If You Could Go Back To Burnden

... which match would you choose.

For me I think it would be Bolton 3 United 0 on December 22, 1978.

you know your stuff Cassie.....I just checked

Bolton 2 Burnley 1

Andy May & Steve Thompson

We won down at Orient on the Saturday, when May also scored. Did anybody go to that one?

Also, was Andy May on loan from City or have I made that up?

Andy May Fact: At Wrexham laster that season, when the players were chucking their kit into the crowd at the end of the matc, my Dad managed to get Andy May's shorts and he was a 34" waist (Andy May, not my Dad) the fat fucker

Oh yes 5 of us went down to Orient - 2-1 i think we won.

We was in a pub after the match - knowing we was playing the Burnley dingles on Monday - and we was shouting chim chimmery we hate the b45t4rds in claret and blue.

Schoolboy error!!

Being 17 at the time - not thinking we was in the East End of London.

Got a few West Ham boys telling us to shut it - as you are " in our manor"

Numerous apologies and said it was burnley.

Sharp exit and off to other pubs

Swindon league cup semi

manchester city burnden park 69,912 record crowd game

swindon at home, coca cola cup semi final 94-95.

corking game

id have to go to the final home game at Burnden Park against Charlton. Awesome match

Have to agree with the 3-0 over the DMB's on that Friday night. Unforgettable.

Others which stick in the memory are a 1-0 win over Chesterfiled in the Armfield era (Alan Waldron long range rocket in the last minute), a 3-2 victory againt the great Liverpool side of the late 60's in the League Cup, the Gary Jones hat trick v City.........

If I could only do it once it would have to be that Friday night game.

Bonfire Night 1985

A 3-0 home defeat v Darlington. Just 2,902 of us (including me) on the ground for that one.

Thousands claim to have been there, so I'd just want to go back and check the attendance wasn't 12,902!

Can think of a few I'd love to relive to be honest:

Wolves play offs

Swindon CC Cup

The 2-2 FA Cup draw versus Liverpool - first real big club I saw at Burnden (Southampton / Coventry not classed as really big)

That game where Compstive scored the 2 corners - Bournemouth or Blackpool maybe? (to make sure I didn't dream it)

The last game versus Charlton - the last time BWFC felt like a real community to me

Andy Walker's 1st goal at Burnden (I think) to see that celebration he used to do to an empty embankment

Stoke at home for my namesake's roly poly celebration and the Stoke supporters cheering

I have been lucky (and old enough) to see many great games at Burnden Park, but the one that stands out is BWFC v Liverpool FA cup 1965 we lost 1-0, over 57,000 on Burnden. If my failing memory serves me right, there was no crowd segregation. I was on the embankment under the lights, nobody went for a piss, they couldnt. Thats when it started, scousers pissing up my back and it has never stopped. Again if memory serves it was a fluke goal from a corner that gave them it.

Beating Stockport 4-1 in Freight Rover, being able to go back home knowing that we were still under the Utd, City cloud but thankfully not worse than County.

Gillingham always sticks in my mind as we lost 1-0, car broke down on way home and missed my own birthday party.

And yes I was part of the 34,000 in the 0-3 Darlo game as I had to miss my school bonfire night!

and... of course all the special 90's nights mentioned.

Can I go back in a delorean rather than a tardis?!

I'd love to go back to the the Charlton last game to take the occasion in again.

Games I missed.

Swindon League Cup Semi Final & Wolves Play offs, are the two stand out ones for me.

Games I was at, Walsall 8-1 just to see the away fans all of them do the Conga around the away end & go absolutely mad after they scored. 6-1 Vs the Spuds League Cup to take apart a Premier League team like that was pure footballing joy.

Cheers. I thought it was only me who remembered that Waldron volley. Right hand edge of the penalty area in the last minute.

That City game was magic. 42,000 on for an evening game in the league cup. Their lot were on the embankment.

"Tra-la la-la, Franny Lee"

(short pause)

"Who the fucking hell is he?"

Mine would have to be the twenty odd games unbeaten streak Phil Neal took us on and watching the attendances slowly rise. Stopping at the Welcome Store on Long Lane for a packet of Hobnobs and Wrigleys Juicyfruit, parking in the same spot on Wheatsheaf St and sitting in the same seats in the paddock every home game. Sad I know but it worked :)

Didnt City have part of the lever End that night - sure I remember being on the Embankment for that game
