If You Could Go Back To Burnden

... which match would you choose.

For me I think it would be Bolton 3 United 0 on December 22, 1978.

  • Can only go off games I went to as a youngster. For me it would be when we beat Spurs 6-1 in coca cola cup, should have been 7!!

Liverpool, league cup in 68, we'd drew 1-1 at their place, the anticipation for the replay was great, then to go and win 3-2.brilliant.

Wish i could do my first game at Burnden too.. but fcuked if i can remember it,just that it was the late 50's.

Was at both games - in Liverpools boys pen for the first game and nearly got linched when the mate I was with celebrated our goal

I don't know the date of my (and my brothers) first game at Burnden and I can't be arsed looking, but it was when Keegan came to town with Newcastle, and I was on the embankment right next to the Newcastle fans.

Cassie - when was it?

That was early September 1982, second game of the 82/3 season.

:good: Just to re-savour a type of atmosphere we'll never see again.

For ones I wasn't at it would have to be the Everton LC semi - it was the game after my first match and the compo tickets I relied on at the time didn't apply

Of course we lost, but to witness 50k in Burnden.

Mind you, I wonder what the equivalent crowd with a seated Lever End was?? Thus when I was at a 35k+ crowd for the Liverpool game in 1979 was that just as packed?

Plus as a little aside, just looking at the stat site, when we sealed the title against Fulham the year before we had 34,110 on, and I remember for a fact that there was one coach load of Fulham fans. So certainly 34k+ Bolton fans. Did we have that many against Everton? I doubt we've ever had that many at Wembley/Cardiff in my 10 attendances at said games.

So in your lifetime, what's the biggest number of Bolton fans you've been in attendance with??

were did they put those Fulham fans? My memory is that the entire Embankment was filled with Bolton fans.

Iirc the Fulham game was a bit of an anti climax.

Biggest crowd for me involving Bolton at Burnden was v Liverpool FA cup 1965 lost 1-0, over 57,000 on.

Similar ....... FA Cup against Wolves 1958 again. 58000 on.

Was at both games - in Liverpools boys pen for the first game and nearly got linched when the mate I was with celebrated our goal

Me too. Was on the Kop. When Lee scored that fantastic goal, I heard a guy beind me applauding it. I looked round to see who'd got more bottle than me, and a scouse voice roared "what the fook are you'se lookin' at, la".

you know your stuff Cassie.....I just checked

Bolton 2 Burnley 1

Andy May & Steve Thompson

We won down at Orient on the Saturday, when May also scored. Did anybody go to that one?

Also, was Andy May on loan from City or have I made that up?

Andy May Fact: At Wrexham laster that season, when the players were chucking their kit into the crowd at the end of the matc, my Dad managed to get Andy May's shorts and he was a 34" waist (Andy May, not my Dad) the fat fucker

i went to orient, was down in london and it seemed like a good idea at the time.

what a shit idea to put seats on the lever end

what a shit idea to put seats on the lever end

It was cheaper than upgrading the crush barriers.

May well be wrong here, butI remember hearing years ago that they had to put seat in there as there is a river runs under where the Great Lever stand was and it was deemed unsafe to have it packed with supporters.

Anyone else ever hear that theory?

I would go back to my first game on 23/04/1988 against Newport County when we won 6-0 and do them all again.

I loved the place!!

Matches I was at : FA Cup quarter final v Wolves 1958.

Matches I didn't get to : Walsall in 1983 (8-1).

........ and FA Charity Shield v Wolves 1958 ....... parents said I had to do homework instead.

This afternoon's Manchester Shield match just reminded me.

What, after 50 years or so ?

Spurs in cup ,2 compo corners ;)

September '93, Bolton 4-3 Forest, Cracking match and some cracking goals, came from 2-0 and 3-2 down to win it late with a cool finish from Patterson clapping.gif clapping.gif

Wolves for me but Spurs, Chelsea, Swindon and Arsenal in Cup come close

In terms of a normal league game, Swindon 7-0 in 96/97

My first ever game...

1 I can't remember who it was against

2 To see the look on my face watching my first ever game

3 To see how shit football really was in the early 70s

Fabulous game.

I remember us being ripped apart by one player all game in a way I'd never seen before - that player was a young Stan Collymore.

Mind you, Julian Darby playing at CB probably was a major factor. :nea:

Take your pick for me:

Preston 93' - one of my first games.

Wolves 95' 5-1 - belive we dicked Charlton the same score the week before.

Charlton 94' - McGinlay hat trick

Middlesbrough 94' - McGinlay hat trick

Wolves 95' - Beautiful

Swindon 97' 7-0 - demolition!!

Charlton last game!

Swindon league cup! Mixu screamer!!!!

I can't pick one!!!!

Everton lcsf in the lever end hardly saw aball kicked as it was so packed.

utd victory

Bristol city first game in the old first division

Fulham in league cup about 75 or 76 when bobby moore took his team off the pitch in protest.

First game I can remember going too - stood on Burnden Terrace - did we draw 0 0 later that season in FA Cup with arsenal - Warwick Rimmer split his head open and came back on with a blood soaked bandage
