For about five years i was paying between ?30 - ?35 a month, i got a water meter installed and the bill dropped to ?23 a month, got a bill last week and its shot up to ?29. I phoned them up and told them i now live on my own and my son moved out in November, so if anything the bill should be less. Sorry about that they said, we will drop your bill down to ?22 a month. What the fucks going on ?

They've even fitted some devise to the meter so that every quarterly bill is read accurately without visiting.

 

Mind you, one time I phoned them, I noticed I had a ?6.95 customer services charge on my bill? I daren't phone them again to find out what that's about?

It seems to me that they took a view on your future consumption based on history, you told them your circumstances have changed and they've reflected that so what's the problem?

Right, that's it, I'm having a meter installed. Srill on rates and it's ?740 for next year, with me working away on average 3 nights a week, and the diaughter only at home fri-sun.

Well to me, the problem is that i have been paying through the nose for yonks to United Utilities.

On a serious note, I think even with a water meter they still have a standing charge linked to your council rates charges. With businesses it's done differently, you only pay for what you use (I think).

I had a meter installed after paying ?1k a year to United Utilities and I'd had enough. My bills dropped to ?44 a month overnight saving around ?650 a year. From what I can work out the meter works for those with a larger family that don't use excessive amounts. Get a water butt and just be sensible and you're quids in

If you rented off the council in the 80s, all the rates were inclusive and included water, bin collecton, police, icky the fire bobby, on your rent book..

So you're going to accept that they'll occasionally shove seven quid on your bill? Get them phoned up and ask what the extras on your bill were. They can't possibly charge you for asking without it hitting the national newspapers.

My water bill is about ?180 quid a year which I presume is cheap as I live in a small house. I can't see a meter being any cheaper and I'd imagine it'd be a ball ache to get one.

Me and Mrs CWP are on a meter, and I think we pay around ?23per month (?276 per year) - we do wash on a fairly regular basis and we always seem to have either the dishwasher or the washing machine are on. So it's pretty good. I don't see that you would be that much better off on a water meter, as ?180 per year is cock all.

Surely if you put your clothes in with your dishes, or vice-versa, there's a potential ?100 p.a. to be saved. Who needs Martin Lewis.

Even more to be saved if I wear my dirty clothes whilst in the shower and do the pots whilst I'm at it....that'll be another ?50 per year saved

Take the lid off your toilet cistern and piss in that - saves wasting flush water with the added bonus of no more 'seat up' arguments.

Not really. You can go back to unmetered bills providing you do it within six months of having the meter installed.
