Yo-Yo Club Or Perennial Strugglers ?

what would most people take as their ideal scenario ?

being a yo-yo club and enjoying the highs and lows as we did in the 90's or struggling to just survive in the premiership ?

considering many of us say their best memories come from the 90's then the yo-yo situation may be best.

the kudos of being an established premiership club may satisfy some people, but the stress of it(as displayed evidently on this forum this weekend)seems to be getting too much for a lot of us.

your opinions please ladies and gents.

my preference would be for the yo-yo club........less pressure and more enjoyment

A conundrum indeed. Premier League status is great - especially down here where the locals have only generally heard of Premier league clubs and mention of anyone outside of it is usually met with a "Who? Never heard of em".

Have to say the yo yo excitement is alluring but what happens if the yo yo doesn't climb back up the string?

I don't know I seem to remember being mightily stressed towards the end of most of those promotion seasons ;)

Honestly for me nowadays i'd rather pay my money to see us playing the 'elite' even if we are struggling. Not to say i wouldn't enjoy it or watch if we went down but what would we want then?

I do see your point and it's crossed my mind a lot this season. Footballs' souls gone now whether we like it not but my loyalty, which at times this year I've almost wished wasn't there, will always be with Bolton. And if im giving them my hard earned corn then, sad as this sounds, I want to see quality for it.

Wouldn't have thought like that a few years ago but now . . .

I dont know how you would know if you are a yo yo club? Do you just presume that you will only last one season in the prem every time you went up?

I would always want my club to be in the prem

well in the 90's we went up twice and came down twice,so i'd take that as being a yo-yo club similar to west brom in recent times.

the championship winning season in the last year at burnden was probably one of the best ever as a Bolton fan, european experiences apart.

equally the 94/95 promotion was another unforgettable season.

the premier league is the holy grail i agree, but it's a damned lonely place when you're struggling after seemingly being firmly established in the elite for a few years.

i'd rather see players giving 100% striving to get in the premiership, instead of underperforming when they reach the pinnacle. seeing very average players such as eagles for one, their lifestyles etc,it's a joke,i would love to see him try and make a living out football. the game's been taken well and truly away from the working class fan

I think English football now is very different to the 90s so I don't think I can compare the two.

It can't be good for a club though to be a yo yo one. Whatever happens, I'm sure I'll have a laugh next season, whether it be in the Barclays Premier League or the npower Championship.

i genuinely worry about the future of the club if we go down.

with the debts of over ?100 million and 14 players out of contract at the end of the season, then we could be in the mighty joe young !!!!!

but,and trying to think positive if we do go down, not many clubs will come sniffing round our underperforming players and we may be able to retain some on reduced terms. Coupled with that, all the injured players should be fully fit and hopefully teams won't take a gamble on the better ones such as holden and chungy. so we'll piss the championship and come back in better shape and rejuvenated with sordell bagging 30 in the process.

on the down side,we'll clear all the high earners and dead wood out of the club and try to consolidate, which could prove even more stressful than this season and leave us teetering precariously on the brink

If you're a yo-yo club, and manage the finances prudently, it should be possible to build up a healthy bank balance with 2-3 promotions & relegations to/from the Prem within a few years.

As opposed to staying in the Premiership and ................. well, fill in the size of of debt for yourselves.

In principle, that's a possibility.

But everyone's just talking about what players we'd have.

But what about the tactical & fitness & training geniuses (genii ?) behind the scenes ? What if they stay the same ?

Can they do another Burnley after the last 18 shell-shocked months ?

I'd be worried.

Burnley and Blackpool banked the dough without investment and have maintained upper end Championship Teams. Our 100m debt is literally on the never never, but if the owner and chairman are happy, the manager is smiling why should we give a fuck?

The problem with being a yo-yo club is when you suddenly just become a yo.

Our club cannot afford more than one season out of the top flight.

I don't know. Clubs like Leeds, Charlton, Wednesday, Southampton etc. are cited as never having recovered from relegation, but have they not ? They are getting (by and large) as good an attendance as we are and seem to be in as stable a state financially as us.

good call there pal.

it may not seem like it at the moment, but going down could actually benefit us in the long term, and not be the end of the world

Don't get me wrong. I hate the thought of relegation, and am still sure we can get out of it, but end of the world ? I don't think so.

if i had nt seen such riches i could live with being poor.

would promotion really seem such a big thing if you were hoping to then get relegated ?

The big problem is there are no guaratees. If a voice from on high offered me two more years of scrabbling about to avoid relegation or a guaranteed return within two years I'd probably take the latter. But of course In the real world there's no such guarantee. The example I used last time about this was Coventry. We replaced them in the PL, they've then had 10 years of nothing - literally nothing, just stagnation - and have now just gone down and are looking forward to playing in front of <10k crowds in a ground they pay a million a year for the privilege of being in, despite taking penny zero of the match day revenue. Now we won't have that problem, but stagnation would wreck us - especially as there's a generation of time-served fans now who have known nothing of such things.

That said, one day we will go down...it's what happens.

If we go down we must bounce back in the first season because it is unlikely Holden and chungy will stick around after that. It will be time for The academy to produce withe likes of Riley, vela and eaves needing to make an impact. Going down would force changes which could be the making or breaking of us. Ideally we stay up tho of course

TBH I would be more concerned about the crowds if relegation happens. All the clubs I mentioned above are getting decent crowds. My worry is that - if this forum is typical across the range of Wanderers fans - could we do the same ?

The general feeling seems to be that too many night matches against the likes current Championship sides is no, we couldn't. And that could make the difference.

we really are teetering on the brink.

i wouldn't like to hazard a guess as to which way it's going to go

You get 1964 until 1978 which scarred me (and you!) permanently.

If we go down, the crowds at home will be around 16,000 early doors, but if we don't win all of our first 3 home games: expect crowds of around 12,000.

Less for night matches. of which there are plenty.

Hey now, com on....cheer up....you dont really have a choice, so just roll with it !

Some might say that its better winning in the lower leagues !

No matter what league you are in, your team will live forever !

Precisely how I felt when I read the first post.

Yo-yo club is ok provided the ups follow soon after the downs. Anything else sees us falling into the wilderness we did well to crawl out of since the 80s. Just be careful what you wish for.

. Whatever happens, I'm sure I'll have a laugh next season, whether it be in the Barclays Premier League or the npower Championship.

With you there nb.

But how fine are the margins when faced with the elite clubs in he nPower Championship?
