You would be right BD, it takes a fair bit of brass neck for our wonderful ruling class to be talking of morals. That said, I do think these 'loopholes' that allow folk to actively reduce their tax need to be closed but if we had a fairer and simpler tax system in the first place they wouldn't exist or be worth the hassle. There are several MPs that run their affairs through limited companies to reduce their tax liability - the morality of that is no different to Carr.

Carr's a scapegoat but well done Cameron for putting the issue in the public agenda.

Perhaps Cameron will now take a closer look at some of the Tory contributors who use similar schemes along with Philip Green who's companies pay fuck all tax compared to earnings

He paid precisely what he should under the prevailing laws, though

Cameron has royally messed up with this one who is advising him should be fired, it has left him wide open to counter speculation on the whole Tory party and his associates, he is going to get absolutely slaughtered.

He can take a popularist, moral high ground stance and announce some (effectively) minor changes to tax law and come out a clear winner.

The old Philip Green moan - He pays his full dues as appropriate under the current laws. His missus owns the companies and pays tax accordingly (in Monaco as it happens but all legit). Carr, as a UK resident, should pay his tax as per the rest of us but farmed a lot of it into some dodgy offshore scheme to try and avoid a fair whack of it. If we had a fairer more simpler tax system in this country the rich wouldn't feel the need to do these tax avoidance measures and we might even see a net gain in tax received anyway - win/win.

Has Cameron forgotten where that dosh he inherited from his dad came from?

He's chosen to forget.

And he dodged the question on Gary Barlow who campaigned for his party in the last election and who has pretty much the same tax arrangements as Jimmy Carr.

No Balls will be along soon to explain why Jimmy Carr is a cunt and Gary Barlow is one of the greatest humans of all time.

I don't agree at all with these tax avoidance schemes as they are morally wrong but who on here if they earned enough would use one?

add to that the people who just did "that small job they did for a neighbour" and got paid cash.....

Nearly everyone I know who owns a business pays themselves 6000 per year as its tax free any other salary is paid as a directors bonus this is legal tax evasion in my eyes, the rest of us who pay normal tax have to pay 30-40% of our salaries tell me how that is a fair system?

Thunder, not sure what you're going in about but I can't abide Gary Barlow.

idiiots....they should be claiming 7430 i think now :D

You still pay tax on the bonus though - it's not tax-free

Tis true but it's taxed at 20%.

They also pay corporation tax.

They also pay another 13p in NI for every pound they pay out in employee wages. You earn a quid, it costs him ?1.13 (thereabouts).

So it's not as straightforward as it sounds.

For once Labour's Steve Miller Band hit the nail on the head, saying:

"I'm not in favour of tax avoidance obviously, but I don't think it is for politicians to lecture people about morality?

I'm just annoyed as the whole affair has reminded me that Gary Barlow is still alive.

its only a problem when youre taking dividends actually as salary.

?8105 tax free, but if its obvious you are doing this and get an inspection you will get pulled on it.

what hmrc will actually do is debatable, but they will question it.

if as a director, youre actually doing fuck all anyway, paying yourself a basic, then reaping the benefits at the end of the tax year, then i see no problem with that.
