Where is this statistically backed up?

Which bit ? The results? GCSE results have gone up ever year since they were introduced.

The reasons why? Just giving my opinion. Of course I am comparing my experience (left in 1990) with my experience of working in a like for like Bolton school for 10 years.

I'm not sure that backs up stat wise though.

You are right - they dropped last year!

I'm not one to knock teachers for their ability or dedication but I'd like to know what they hope to acheive by striking. Do they really think that inconveniencing many thousands of parents who have, themselves, had to accept the realities of the current UK/global economic problems helps their cause? I think not. More importantly, the government know that public opinion is against the striking teachers so will be unmoved by the action.

Partly. Are pupils naturally more intelligent than the 80's or 90's? Of course not. The main reason why results continue to rise is down to three factors - teachers working harder, students working harder and inequalities in the exam system - and I would put them in that order.

Unfortunately sarcasm doesn't transfer well in written form!

S'pose that's why so many school leavers end up doing basic maths and literacy courses!

Nope - teachers and pupils working harder has nowt to do with it

It's all to do with stats, thresholds and boundaries and how these are defined. Complicated as shit and top secret to boot, I could go into proper detail but it would bore the b'jaysus out of you and then I'd have to kill you all afterwards.

Teachers are scum!

Do you think so?

I'd take the opinion of what I see and hear in trade and industry rather than educational propaganda.

I'd say the exams must be piss easy now because so many of the young uns I've seen coming through over the last generation are thick as fuck.

I see plenty of cv's and its apparent when you delve into them that literacy and numeracy skills are shocking. Handwriting is abysmal. It's a common theme when you speak with other employers.

Ok I know there's plenty clever kids but by shite there's some thick cunts too yet results have improved?? Aye alreet.

Teachers are scum!

Sums up the well-informed debate that this subject always brings up.  And the fact that many parents have this attitude and spend time verbally abusing and physically threatening/attacking teachers make me wonder why folk on here wonder why they are stressed.  I am not a teacher but I am married to one and I wouldn't swap my private sector job for what she does any day.  Big blokes from council estates in ex-mining towns physically threatening women for giving their little Johnny a bollocking for being a horrible little bastard is Mrs Wiggums' regular experience.  Plenty of folk who place absolutely no value on education see school as free child care; if you think teachers are scum and school is there for your child-minding convenience don't have kids.  Or educate your little darlings at home, a perfectly legal option which amazingly few folk take up for some reason...

If you've got kids Birch-Chorley I pity them, and I pity even more the poor fuckers who will have to teach them if that's your attitude.

Blame the National Curriculum, not the folk who have to teach it.

I'm not blaming anyone or anything.

I'm telling him that the propaganda the educational authorities pump out is a big bucket of bollocks.

Fair enough

You can't blame a curriculum for the fact people are coming to the UK with English as a second or third language yet they've got more of a grasp of the language than some fucker with 10 A*s.

You can't blame a curriculum for the fact people are coming to the UK with English as a second or third language yet they've got more of a grasp of the language than some fucker with 10 A*s.

Why can't you? Teachers teach the material they are told to deliver, they no longer have any say on how they do it.  They do not set the exams, they do not decide the curriculum, their job is now to deliver the maximum number of kids getting good grades in their GCSE's.  The notion of teachers trying to help kids become well-rounded individuals has been steadily eroded by utterly meaningless league tables and the fact that parents think they and their kids have certain 'rights'.  Music and competitive sport pretty much only exist in schools because those lazy bastard teachers do most of it in their spare time.

It fucks me off. Exam results improve:- teachers are cunts.  Exam results get worse:- teachers are cunts. Teacher bollocks a kid:-she's a cunt because little Johnny is a fucking angel. Teacher doesn't bollock a kid:- she's a cunt who doesn't have any idea of discipline.  Every parent wants more discipline in schools until their brave little soldier is on the receiving end of it, and then suddenly it is a huge injustice and the teacher should be sacked. Mrs W has been through this a million times, trust me, the tales I could tell would make your jaw drop.

Some folk may even argue that maybe parents should possibly have a tiny little bit of input into their kids education? Bit radical I know, the idea of reading with your kids, taking an interest in what they are doing at school, maybe even getting involved with school sports/activities, becoming a school governor, that kind of thing....?  Buy books instead of Sky and PS3?  I'm not being funny but if my kids were practically illiterate at the age of 16 I'd be having a good look at myself, not bleating about teachers..

So they have tough aspects of their job. Don't we all?

I still don't think this justifies going on strike.

It's basic English that underpins everything. Very good Jonhny, you've obviously researched crop rotation (used Wikipedia) but you can't fucking spell so you've failed. D for Dunce.

I'm not claiming it's their job to teach the basics but fuck off rewarding every single simpleton with an A+.

They'll be on strike again soon.

Ashes start in a fortnight.

I'll try again...

Teachers in this country do not set the curriculum, do not set 'targets', do not set the testing regime, the course work or examinations.

They teach what they are told to teach and mark as they are told to mark.  If you don't like the results then don't just blame teachers, blame successive Departments of Education and the parents of the 'simpletons' who don't give a fuck.

So they have tough aspects of their job. Don't we all?

Yes we do. However the threat of physical violence should not be considered 'part of the job'. Unless you're a boxer or whatever...

I had the old "i'll get my dad' a few times, most notably when I dragged this little shit out of the bus queue after launching himself from 10 yard away and knocking every fecker flying.

I told him, 'Go on then, and I'll get mine. Me and my dad against you and your dad. You up for it?'

I never was cut out for that job

If kids can't read, write and do sums at 16 it's not the fault of schools or the government

My issue is with trying to direct so many to university

I also have no time for teachers going on strike just cos they're potentially affected by 'real world' stuff

Oh aye

Anybody who threatens a teacher just for trying to ensure decent standards of manners and behaviour should be shot
