For The Older Lads

Did the 80-84 decline have a similar feel to this?

Just wondering really

I was too young to know

no I am right and you are wrong the expectations were lower so maybe that's part of it, I lived through it you were a spunk stain, I loved every day of the 4th division because every one stuck together, please don't try to be cocky because u are a tart, this moment in time feels much much worse

Don't get the hump, I wasn't have a dig at you personally. You are one of the most positive guys on here and it was meant partially in jest.

The point about it being a bit grim stands though. It was hardly the San Siro every week.

Hugs etc. xxxx

Halifax away in the cup showed what a difference the time was. The feeling of getting a last minute equaliser was fantastic (or was it the pitch invasion & general noise of sirens before & after the game). Bit shocked to be on the front page of the Evening News afterwards though

It was grim and emabarrassing at times:

Doncaster Rovers away Christmas 87 was a low point

Getting outclassed and losing 3-0

Wanderers fans locked in a cage on low level terracing that was directly behind the nets.

You looked and the debacle on the field through a fence and the nets.

Awful view, awful game, freezing cold.

Getting beat 6-1 at Notts County ...they scored 5 goals on 7 minutes (or something like that), made news at 10 headlines.

Barnsley in the FA Cup away...massive support....pathetic performance

Being embarrassed at Coventry in the FA Cup, Cyril Regis dancing around our static defence

Watching the Embankment being ripped apart. Seats in the Lever End

Times were bad.

Does it feel the same now.....nahhh....but it is embarassing.

No soul in our team now....those 80's carthorses used to try hard ...the class inhereted by Dougie can all go for me..big clear out needed

Anyone remember that game at Burnden in the 70's when Nat played all the kids against sheff utd (top of league) ...the nucleus of that team begame Jim armfield and Ian Greaves total football team !

The main thing i feel we have lost over last year is the connection between fans and players- compared to other clubs is non-existent.

As you lot rightly say we need some characters in the changing rooms- somebody to fly into challenges get th'crowd going away from home.

Cyril Regis was a class player is he still playing?

fair enough mate, apologies if i offended u i cant take my ale sadly, never could, onward and upward mate

Remember the Doncasyter game well, coldest game I have ever been to. Barsley & Coventry away in the cup were fun though

The early 80's was when I developed my love for things BWFC, getting hammered 7-1 at QPR and asking my old man who scored for us. Getting relegated at Charlton and thinking we would go up again the following season.

Things were grim then - nowhere near as bad now. Back then you simply couldn't see the bad days ending - Aldershot at home was the worst day ever watching Bolton for me, then Scarborough happened - was hard going into school in Blackburn that following Monday as the 92nd best team in the country.

Things are disappointing at the moment and may even get worse before they get better but it won't get as bad as the early 80's again

Coventry...Mark Came at centre forward if irc?......hmmmm sounds like a cunning plan!

Was the Donny game where Farnworth caught the ball than stepped back over the line with it?

Reckon age has a massive influence- didn't matter somehow back then- perhaps because I'd not seen the great times earlier in the club's history.

Walking up Raikes Lane trying to judge the crowd size purely on the noise level coming from Burnden- was all part of it!

Back then players were far less 'professional' in the sense the scientific/psychological support wasn't there and players wages I'd assume were proportionally lower.

Rightly or wrongly it seems too few of today's players don't give a shiny because they don't need to and there seems less passion- feels worse now but in reality isn't.

Was the not Felgate at Chesterfield? With chaos on the terraces at Saltergate as a backdrop!?

Was the not Felgate at Chesterfield? With chaos on the terraces at Saltergate as a backdrop!?

Yes, the ball came down almost vertical from a gigantic hoof ....I knew Felgate was going to mess it up as he had too much time to think !

Saltergate was always a dodgy place to go.....I remember having lumps of concrete thrown at us across a paddock fence .....Phil Neal came over and told us all to calm down.

I remember the following season or maybe it was the same game , the police made Wanderers fans file out through one little exit gate to a set of waiting Spirites .....scary times .

Still at Chesterfield, I remember a cup replay .... a rescheduled postponement  .... Stuart  Stores coming on as a sub and running em ragged :)

There's a fair bit of truth in all of what has been posted....does it feel worse now..for me yes..because we've had the good...and we could of avoided the bad and where we are now...Coyles team were to good to go down...I blame him and with another proven more experienced manage we should be doing a lot better in the league we are in now....

Back then I knew no different....sporadic games through the late seventies when my dad would take me...and thenwatching full time from the early 80's....

I to would be amazed when we had crowds over 5000, there used to be that much space on the paddock....

Yes I was at the aldershot game and Wrexham the year after....but we had always known disappointment and we expected nothing less....

But we as a club invested for the future...ground...manager etc....

Which makes it all the more painful now.

Chesterfield was a great day out in 86, even the transport police after the game made sure the train back was held up at the station going to Manchester and then when it did set off prevented us getting off at Sheffield.

I've got the whole of that Chesterfield match in 86 on a VHS cassette. Very little of the crowd action is visible as it is all going off in the side terrace on the same side of the pitch as Dave Higson and his camera. Some limited trouble can be seen. However there are sound effects galore, including bricks and all sorts flying in to the commentary box that Dave Higson is sitting in, and the canine units being sent in to the Bolton end!

On the football front, it is absolutely terrible and at least we've a little way to go yet before we get that bad

The Wolves one in div 4 had over 12000 on in 88, and a handier set of lads watching us get beat 4-0, and then the miracle came in the shape of Supa John to wipe away all the bad memories of the yam yam cunts in the years to come.

Think thats the game we had a good following in the terrace, were at the end of the game a mob of bolton were trying to get onto the pitch to have a go at wolves in the south bank while a mob of bolton at the other end of the terrace were kicking the gates in to get at wolves outside - carnage after the game!

Had all the lower terrace, just had shit thrown at us from above all during the game.
