For The Older Lads

Did the 80-84 decline have a similar feel to this?

Just wondering really

Yes

That period was truly grim. Not sure anything really compares with that. Remember that we were one of the favourites for automatic promotion at the start of this season.

I'd like to know too. I'm sure there would have been some depressing threads on an early 80's version of WWays though.

It's getting the feel of the first year or 2 outside of the top flight but believe me the 5 years after that were truly truly worse, we did not win away in London for years every away game was defeat after defeat for years and years and getting beat at home by the likes of Hartlepool and Darlington were often occurrences, I can tell you BWFC were virtually unsupportable in that period and the club was lower than a snakes belly. We are going exactly the same way on our current course.

Yes, very similar.

Managing to get RELEGATED via the play-offs probably summed up that period.

I'd like to think the club has better direction now.

If we can avoid going down this season, I think we should be ok.

Lot of hard work needed though.

We didn't have the Reebok, we had a crumbling shell of a ground that was draining our resources. Our loans were with the banks and not a benevolent owner and they weren't quite as accommodating. Our strikers were both signed from non-league clubs. We had average crowds of under 10,000 for about 15 years. It's nowhere near as bad at the moment.

That was 87, by then we'd shed all the shit fans and when we did go down people were singing "we'll support you evermore". Where evermore doesn't just mean the Premier League.

When they start selling us a new Lifeline subscription, I'll be hitting the same panic button many on here have been hammering at for a few years.

is the wrong answer

dont you know its all about wallowing in self pity

Walking away from the Aldershot defeat and thinking Christ, Burnley have just held on to league status by the skin of their teeth - that could be us next year. THAT was bad

What do you call shit fans is it those moaning like myself or do you have some other shitfanometer? I can tell you I will still be there if we're in the bottom league but if something's not right should we not say it?

If I remember correctly, 5 years with sub 5k average crowds.

I vividly recall thinking "this is a good turn out", from what I could see at Burnden for one game or other, and being tickled pink to have it confirmed in the papers the next day by them saying it was 6.5k or so....

See I remember being down there in the mid 80's

Just not the descent

It all looked the same when you're kicking a can around the Bottom of the Lever End / MRT

If it feels like that again I'm worried

Between 83 and 90 I think we had 3 league crowds over 10000, 2 of which were against Bury.

Its nowhere near as bad.

We are bad now, but we have some way to fall before its THAT bad.

Lies!

Burnden was always full

Remember seeing 14000 turn up in 89 for that second reply against Swindon. I'd never seen anything like it in the previous 5/6 years.

The Burnden Lifeline saved the club back then. That and selling half the Embankment End.

They were grim days for sure, this is definitely beginning to feel the same .

I'm very disappointed. When I opened this thread I thought I'd be seeing pictures of Charlie's Angels, or Isla St Clair

dark days, but bouncing back is a fcking great feeling!!

Yes it feels the same insome respects

But not in others

Lower crowds (although always a sell out),worse players if you can believe that and a feeling of utter shitness

As stated above we owed the bank not ed

These are the times what being a bwfc fan makes the good times taste so much sweeter

It felt a lot lot worse back then, dont forget we were turning up to a complete shithole,i would never of gone in if i hadnt spent an hour in the pub before

Dont think i even saw a kick off in the fourth division and i didnt miss many home games. It was always lets just have another before we make a move!
