Shaking/fit When Just About To Fall Asleep

This happened for the first time about two weeks ago.

All day on the piss Saturday at Leeds away.

Sunday up early and went work.

Went to bed usual time Sunday night feeling tired. Just as I was at the point of falling asleep my body went into some kind of fit and I started shaking like fuck and had to kind of pull myself out of it. Happend all through the night, everytime I got to the point of falling asleep It would happen again. Finally got to sleep about 5am without it happening.

Went out on Friday for the big Cheltenham piss up with work. Was expecting the same Saturday night but fell asleep no problem. Sunday night it was back again though. This was even worse. Got in bed and 10 minutes later just as im about to fall asleep my whole body locks up and starts shaking like some kind of fit, only this time with my eyes open a picture of a face was in front of me (think it was my old man) and it was scary as fuck. It happened again last night on a smaller scale, so effectively 3 nights after the beer.

I'm not completely stupid and know I need to cut down the drink but has anyone else experienced this and any advice?

Your body can't cope with trying to sleep without alcohol.

Have two weeks solid without a drop and by the end of it you will be sleeping like a log.

Edit..get some kalms or similar for first couple of nights if you are really struggling.

Smoke a big of crack before bed time, works a treat.

Replace booze with weed to sleep

When it starts to mess with your head, swap back to booze

Repeat as appropriate

Surprised it took so long with your lifestyle Garrpo

Nightnurse

Trust me

Garrp

Google Sleep Paralysis

I've had it for years

It's scary as fuck when it first happens

But I'm used to it now

Time to ease off the beer, young Garrp

and move on up to red wine

I've had them, I got the quivers down my backbone, I got the shakes down my knee bone, the tremors in my thigh bone, shaking all over.

Don't do what Zico says for goodness sakes, you'll get the hippy hippy shakes..

I used to get sleep paralysis quite often during my Ecstacy taking days, i couldnt move and it would feel like i was getting an electric shock

Fucking horrible.

grow up, you tit

Are the two of you top and tailing on Saturday night?

Try a sleeping tablet for the first night with a hangover; you'll sleep like a log the night after as well and then, perhaps, don't have a drink for a bit.

spaz, its him or undies

Only because you will be fast asleep in bed before me

Sleep in the bath.

Could be sleep paralysis like Ryan wrote, but if it's accompanied by physically shaking it's more like likely the beginnings of alcohol-withdrawal, without trying to shit you up, every time this happens it likely brings down the 'threshhold' for it happening again.

If you want the exact medical explaination...

Alcohol passes directly from the digestive tract into the blood vessels. In minutes, the blood transports the alcohol to all parts of the body, including the brain.

Alcohol affects the brain’s neurons in several ways. It alters their membranes as well as their ion channels, enzymes, and receptors. Alcohol also binds directly to the receptors for acetylcholine, serotonin, GABA, and the NMDA receptors for glutamate.

GABA’s effect is to reduce neural activity by allowing chloride ions to enter the post-synaptic neuron. These ions have a negative electrical charge, which helps to make the neuron less excitable. This physiological effect is amplified when alcohol binds to the GABA receptor, probably because it enables the ion channel to stay open longer and thus let more Cl- ions into the cell.

The neuron’s activity would thus be further diminished, thus explaining the sedative effect of alcohol. This effect is accentuated because alcohol also reduces glutamate’s excitatory effect on NMDA receptors.

However, chronic consumption of alcohol gradually makes the NMDA receptors hypersensitive to glutamate while desensitizing the GABAergic receptors. It is this sort of adaptation that would cause the state of excitation characteristic of alcohol withdrawal.

Alcohol also helps to increase the release of dopamine, by a process that is still poorly understood but that appears to involve curtailing the activity of the enzyme that breaks dopamine down.

To paraphrase, the brains neurons are 'calmed' by booze (we get pissed - relaxed, clumsy, slur words etc.), they in turn try and revert to normal state - they overcompensate (hardened drinkers hardly get clumsy, slur words etc.)...

When we take away the booze, the neurons are still overcompensating, yet the 'calmer' has been removed (booze) - so they go into overdrive, you have anxiety, feelings of dread, impending doom at best or at worst you can start to fit.

Like most of the other posters have said it's probably time to have a prolonged period of abstinence from booze. Do it now while you're still able to on your own (i.e. without medication to help).

Even if/when you resume drinking, don't get so fucking hammered and definitely don't get hammered two (more?) days on the trot....When you're getting nearer to thirty than you are to twenty every bender (hello sailor!) takes you closer to the nightmare of dependent drinking...

All this isn't intended to shit you up or piss on your chips - it's good it's been caught/noted this early.

However if you stay off the booze for say, like Gonzo says, four weeks, and they persist I'd go and ask your GP if they can arrange a sleep test.

I've had sleep paralysis many a time

But the shaking, eyes open business doesn't sound like it, more like the DTs

You're gonna have to lay off the booze, certainly drinking consecutive days/nights

i had a skinfull on sunday afternoon, thats me done until Huddersfield away. 3 weeks detox will sort me out

My problem is that I dont drink that often, once a fortnight maybe, but when i do, i dont know when to stop and end up getting wasted.

The night after having a sesh i really struggle to sleep, I never thought of it as coming down from the ale, more to do with being over tired.

i set great potential for a dutch rudder here when garp nods off

Very similar to me pal

Garrp, have you checked your pyjamas for dampness afterwards?

Surprised it took so long with your lifestyle Garrpo

Nightnurse

Trust me

It's the Promethazine in the Night Nurse which does the trick (it's actually a mild anti-psychotic!) - but remember every dose has a hefty amount of Paracetamol in it, so always stick to the stated dose (certainly no more than 5-6ml over the recommended dosage -always use the measuring cap) and don't have any more for six hours at least, your liver will already be working overtime, the last thing it needs is a load of Paracetamol to process as well.

It's better to go to your GP and claim you're a really bad time getting off to sleep and it's turning "into a cycle", "you've tried everything..." etc. and ask if they can give you anything short term just to 'break the cycle'.

With luck they'll write a prescription for a low mg dose Diazepam, and probably only around ten of them, so use them wisely...

If you can get hold of Diazepam it's much better than swigging Night Nurse, make sure they're the real thing though - in a branded blister pack. They're prescription only so the ones you can buy of the internet are probably made up of all sorts that can pass for a sedative (small amounts of ketamine, travel sickness pills, valerian - anything they can get their hands on).

Think most of us on here have been through times where we have hit it hard pal,so don't be convincing yourself you are an alcoholic or whatever.

Just get yeovil out of the way and chill out for a bit.

I drank every single day of my life for ten solid years pal,to excess as well,so know exactly what your on about.

The penny dropped for me coming home from benidorm on a stag do and the 7 other member where strewn across the airport lounge dying with alcoholic poisoning/comedowns and I had 4 pints to stop me shaking before even put the bags through haha.

Have a couple of weeks off,get some night nurse or whatever if you are really struggling, drink a minimum 4 litres of water a day and get rid of all the toxins.

Like Dan says, hit it as hard as you like when you do...just give your body and mind time to recover when you do.

Nothing wrong with supping in moderation every day by the way,but again like Dan says that's ok if you can stop at 2/3.
