I'm sure they said it wasn't about competing with London, more to compete globally, from working together.

The boroughs of "greater Manchester" can't work together for transport, so I'm not hopeful.

I think I heard they've missed Liverpool off it. Well, there was a scouser on moaning so presumed so

Fair play though as they're on about moving stuff quicker rather than just people as the M62 can be a nightmare

The M62 is a fucking nightmare every single day, so for that reason it's fine.

However, the money would be much better spent on local links. Keeping Manchester better connected would make it compete with any city, anywhere.

Reducing the A580 to 2 lanes for a bus lane doesn't seem like a great idea

Hopefully, it's not being designed by the same genius who has created the gridlock approaching the Crescent (cunt)

Does anyone actually know what the fuck was going on in the heads of the folk who dreamt up all that Salford crescent mess

Is it looking like the Parisian boulevard they planned yet?

Well, having spent a bit of time on this, the chap in charge of the roads acrossthe conurbation says that Salford made this decision unilaterally and that their jealousy of Manchester might be a factor.

To be fair to the scousers it does make sense to improve the rail links between them and the mancs. With Manchester being between Leeds and Liverpool and with a decent airport too it could help businesses in the NW.

That's what I suspected and I heard the same from several others

Salford council are cunts. Jealous of Manchester, stopping folk from round here getting to work.

The Crescent is fucked again, New Quay Street is really fucked.

Sadly, the quickest way in is through residential areas and past schools. Fuck Salford, their tower blocks and their smackheed residents.

Having said that, it's going to make the drive into Manchester much nicer. I worked on the two tower blocks that have just been completed and it's improved the lives of a lot of the residents. The majority of people in there are decent folk and it'seems only the odd few residents bringing it down.

The first time I went to Manchester after they had fucked up that junction I wondered what the frig was going on. One lane for straight on, a bus lane and fucking speed bumps on a major route into the centre - total madness.

The bus and cycle lane are closed whilst some cunt takes about 6 months to sort out a path.

The road 'improvements' are stupid

Don't think there will be any reduction in traffic lanes due to the bus lane, apart from while it's being built, the 580 is 2 lanes now along a lot of the bus route , they are building a dedicated bus land in addition to what's there I believe

Electioneering bollocks. Sure we will be hearing a lot more about schemes for the North.

Is it looking like the Parisian boulevard they planned yet?

Non.

In a nut shell no. They want their heads testing though.

Back on topic the rail link is a great idea and could be part of a bigger idea of merging Leeds and Manchester into almost one super city to compete with London.

The Northern cities used to be power houses years ago and generated most of the wealth of this great nation, just an outpost these days with everything generated with the banking sector dahn sarf.

As above, it's not about competing with London (which would be a pointless zero sum game, and utterly laughable). This is about competing with Lyon, Rotterdam, Frankfurt, Milan.

The Milanese wouldn't be impressed with being lumped in as a 'second city' - they very much consider themselves at the business end of Italy.

Has anyone else heard of the blue banana? Or John Prescott's plan for a northern supercity? They're both worth a Google.

Salford doesn't like being seen as the place that everyone drives through to get to Manchester. The only problem is they are the place everyone drives through to get to Manchester.

Frank, you are almost right except for the couple of now decent bits like Media City - Its just that everyone outside of the local area assumes it is Manchester anyway!
