  • Can't see him being played in position, he'll end up being a winger or somewhere useless. If Douglas wanted to play 2 up top, he would've gone with beckford and Davis up top in pre season

Im not missing the point at all. I understand playing to players strengths is a good idea.--- yes you are, go back, read what I quoted, then renember.... This is a Joe Mason thread.

The problem is I am really struggling to work out what the fuck his strength is. Being shit and missing loads of chances doesn't really look good on his CV. --- it'll come to you with another decade or so of watching.

So we just accept that because where we are we cant sign or have any good players? --- finances dictate they'll be hard to come by, so make the best of what is available.

I understand we took a chance on him etc but it hasn't worked. Only so many times you can try polishing a turd before it turns to mush.--- You have Beckford issues, let it go, you're getting on the wrong persons back.

You said if we play to Beckford's stengths he will score goals. The only trouble with that his unless playing to his strengths means presenting him with about 12 sitters per match he aint gonna score shit. Mason would score more goals on the same amount of chances because he is just a better player all round.

Maybe considering your such an expert you can let us all know what his strengths are then?? Maybe you should tell Dougie as well because he cant work them out either.

Finances point is understandable but he is probably one of if not our top earner. There must be cheaper donkeys out there somewhere.

The guy just simply isn't good enough. That wont change even if Dougie fucks off.

beckford can score goals

he doesn't look like the type to lack confidence, but i wonder if he is

i don't see beckford and mason forming a partnership

either of em with davies would seem our best bet currently

Glad he's back but still a sobering thought that borrowing players from the likes of Cardiff is our main hope this season.

pity we cant borrow one from the mighty middlesbrough, eh?

Good players can come from anywhere.

Finding them is the hard bit.

when do the prem clubs have to name their squads?

1st September IIRC

I disagree. I feel you're letting yourself in for a big disappointment. The point I was trying to make, that you still are missing, is that Joe Mason is average, as someone has pointed out, I was agreeing. Not playing to Mason's strengths will be like not playing Beckford to his, he'll not be able to prove he's average as he'll be made to look shit playing a role he's not suited too.

As I'm supposed to be working & I'm on my phone, I'll keep it brief. Beckford is best playing in the channels between defender, using his pace & getting 1 on 1's with the keeper. You need a Becchio type dropping in the hole picking the ball up & playing him in, that's why We're missing Mavies, there's more, but I'm not writing an essay

Playing them appropriately appears to be too

Im not saying Mason is a world beater but he is a better player than Beckford. His movement, touch, pace and finishing are all better than Beckford.

No point getting one v one with the keeper if you miss them is it? Which is precisely what he does. I know we don't play his most suited system but when chances come they need to be taken whichever way we play and he is an expert at missing them.

Unless he has bought some pace off somebody he isn't quick either.

Your proof is where? Because I didn't see it first time round, we'll agree to disagree.

That's Beckford, that's why he's not a Champions league player, that's why he's not a Prem player, that's why he needs many chances, but We're not giving him them. He proved it at Leeds, he showed it at Hudds. Both my ST holding friends at both clubs loved him because he scored & were equally frustrated at how many he should have scored. Again, we'll have to agree to disagree.

Sorry, pace may be the wrong word, though you don't have to be Usain Bolt to get a yard of pace on the opposition.

Well both scored 6 goals last season but one took a lot less time to score 6 than the other did. I will let you work out which one.

We aren't creating loads of chances fair enough but good strikers take their share and he doesn't. He misses way too many chances and even at championship level that isn't good enough.

I think it's the 2nd this yr as the transfer window doesnt shut til the 1st.

Agree with tyls, Beckford misses way too many chances.

Ideally we need to get somebody in that can play alongside Mason or Beckford that is better than C.Davies.

At the moment it has to be Craig Davies and Mason, with Beckford coming off the bench.

But Douglas will prob stick with 1 up top.

Glad he's back but still a sobering thought that borrowing players from the likes of Cardiff is our main hope this season.

Brighton borrowed one of ours last year and got in the playoffs.

In a way, Swansea did too. Although they might as well have borrowed a mannequin out of Topshop's window.

If he's on the end of a chance, that's 50 per cent of the job. The other 50 per cent comes from confidence, form and consistency, all of who have been woefully lacking. I'm not writing him off just yet.

pity we cant borrow one from the mighty middlesbrough, eh?

Borrow yes, buy no,just like Mason. So still a sad state of affairs

it is sad

but its where we are at

and while we take 5/6 million a year in gate receipts and don't sell players, its not gonna get any less sad

for perspective, 15 first teamers on 8k a week eats that up

Can't see him being played in position, he'll end up being a winger or somewhere useless. If Douglas wanted to play 2 up top, he would've gone with beckford and Davis up top in pre season

Don't really need to say much more about Beckford after last night. Fucking rank.

Next time he turns to the crowd and starts trying to gee us up I hope somebody smacks the twat.

Mason is a shoe in for Saturday.

Edited by tylswhite

in the absence of any signings and if we play 4-4-2 id be pissed off if davies wasnt given the chance to play with him

i still reckon it might be 1 up top until we get the next striker

Me too. Davies has worked a lot harder and looked a lot more interested than Beckford.

I think Mason might play on the left though on Saturday.

When he chased back with the Bury break last night and helped break it down he gave more fight and hustle than Beckford had given all game.

He deserves to play alongside Mason.

Id rather have a player not good enough but works his bollocks off than Beckford

I thought Wilkinson looked decent last night before he tired. With the ball at his feet he was quite creative. Be interested to see him with Beckford.

Don't understand why people are claiming that Bury were excellent. They did ok against a very poor Bolton side, but let's not start bum chumming them just because they were underdogs.
