September 5, 201411 yr Wigan usually beat us though don't they? They knocked us out of the Lancs Cup a couple of times recently
September 5, 201411 yr Wigan go about it a different way, similar to Burnley. When players get released from "big clubs" they pick them up and hope they come good. Costs less money to train them if you get a couple almost ready for first team and you'd hope you've got a decent player having been trained by top coaches at top clubs.
September 5, 201411 yr Saying that 5 of the burnley u21s in the side that beat Bolton 3-0 in December were all there pre 14
September 5, 201411 yr Bury got to the final of the lancs senior cup the other week, and played a similar side that we played in the league cup. Clubs use the local cup comps for different reasons. Bolton tend to put out a u21 team even though they could put out a 1st team. I think bury beat utd last season in the Mcr senior cup.
September 5, 201411 yr All this time and money... Is it actually worth it? Do we see any return financially? I can only think of Kevin Nolan in the past 30 years that has come through the ranks and been sold at a major profit.

Made £4m from Stubbs as well, though I'm not sure if he came through the ranks as such or if we brought him in at 18-19 in the same manner as McAteer?

September 5, 201411 yr I think Stubbs came in as a First Year Scholar or whatever they were called then. He was a Liverpool schoolboy, I think. Would be very disappointed if none of the youth team from the season before last made the grade. Main problem has been at U21 level where the coaching has not been brilliant. Alan Cork just shouted the whole bloody time. Then we had Coyle's buddy who spent the whole game taking notes. Can't say anything about Jamie Fullarton due to lack of seeing the u21s recently. Oh and Jimmy Phillips was a brilliant reserve team coach when we won the League.
September 5, 201411 yr £8.5 million return in 30 years? Ace. And only one of those through the 'academy'.
September 5, 201411 yr £8.5 million return in 30 years? Ace. It's only slightly less than your income.
September 5, 201411 yr Jamie Fullerton is a brilliant coach Doesnt take no shit either unlike Douglas.
September 5, 201411 yr Jamie Fullerton is a brilliant coach Just out of interest what makes him a brilliant coach?
September 5, 201411 yr Just out of interest what makes him a brilliant coach? he's got 4 big wheels and comfy seats.
September 7, 201411 yr He demands that the players always play with intent and has a strict structure, organisation, respect and discipline engrained in the squad.
September 7, 201411 yr He demands that the players always play with intent and has a strict structure, organisation, respect and discipline engrained in the squad. It'll never catch on.
September 8, 201411 yr Spurs have a very good youth set up. Bentaleb was mentioned earlier in the thread but worth noting that Andros Townsend, Jake Livermore, Harry Kane and Steven Caulker all came through their youth system. Considering the amount of transfer fees they have spent, that's significant quality that has come through their system into their first team. Caulker and Livermore were both sold for 8 million pounds each. The worse we get the easier it should be for our youth players to come through, but it's not working like that. Having watched the U21s a bit, my honest opinion is most aren't good enough. We had a lad called Jack Sampson, who played for the England U19s, got released now at morecambe. Alex Mcquade got released, signed by Shrewsbury, a year later is at guiseley. Most who get released were nowhere near good enough to begin with. We need to be better at spotting talent at a young age but it's hard competing with all the clubs around the north west.
September 12, 201411 yr We need to be better at spotting talent at a young age but it's hard competing with all the clubs around the north west. Or it could be a question of spotting the talent but poor coaching not letting that talent fully realise itself.
