You have drawn a long bow there sonny.

Your just a left wing-bed wetting-hand wringing-yoghurt knitting- red-commie- liberal-sodomite.

Best manager we've ever had. Would have him back here in the blink of an eye. That's no offence to Neil Lennon whatsoever.

It annoys me when Bolton fans criticise Sam.

My only criticism of his whole tenure is that we should have ended up with more to show after what we achieved.

We should have been a rock solid premiership club with an infrastructure to suit.

Wether those foundations could have been laid during his tenure I don't know.

But what happened in the years after is a fucking travesty. The legacy vanished within 3 seasons.

Thankyou for JJ and Youri, THE BEST PLAYERS AND THE BEST MANAGER

You can only have a legacy, if the people following you do the same they didn't, so what Sam built was pulled down brick by brick

The main problem, and this was briefly touched on, was that this model couldn't work for a really long period of time. It was used well by Sam when he could. If it could still be done he'd have replicated the same success at all his following clubs, and he hasn't.

And as much as I appreciate everything Sam did for the club, it didn't leave us in the most sustainable position. Free transfers meant higher salaries, so incoming players had higher salaries to match the current players, and when we were sent down due to incompetence we were left with the debt-ridden club we are now trying to clean up.

Not that I'd give those years back to be more solid now. At least we're not doing a Portsmouth.

But as the report said success on the whole is linked to salary expenditure not transfer fees.

Megson should never have been allowed to be spending £4/5m a pop on centre halves, right backs and midfielders.

The transfer spend in that era was wasted especially as those players were allegedly collecting wages not dissimilar to their predecessors who mostly came on frees.

Aye like I say I'm not blaming Sam and the ride was amazing and like you say it was unsubstanable.

I just look at the way stoke handled the exit of Pulis with envy.

I agree about unsustainable. However, had the money Megson was given been made available to Sam, life may have proved very different. Sam had earned those pay-days out of Eddie. He got to spend on Anelka, but not a great deal else. Then Megson got £13m for Elmander and Muamba!

I hope Sam comes back one day. If he does, I suspect it'll be heading a consortium of wealthy backers to buy us out. Wishful thinking.

It wasn't as simple as a case of Allardyce not being backed and then Megson being backed. A massive new TV deal came into force between the two managers, if Allardyce was still around, I'm sure he would have been given the same money Megson was.

Allardyce was backed though. We were spending ridiculous money for a club of our size on wages in the last few seasons and one of the reasons it wasn't sustainable is that we were signing players who had no resale value. Other than Anelka and Ricketts, i can't think of anyone we actually made a profit on in that period.

Are you thinking of Megson's signings COYW? I can't think of many of them that resold for much more than we paid, £7m for Cahill for £5m spent.

No Allardyce's. Other than the two i mentioned, i can't think of anyone else he signed that we made a profit on. It's not a criticism because he got more right than wrong but it wasn't a sustainable model for a club of our size.

Big Sam wanted and deserved the money in the Summer of 2007.

It's a while ago so I have more than likely forgotten but which players did he sign for significant fees, let's say more than £2.5m?

I think what he was getting at was that we signed players who cost us a lot in wages, and those players were never going to realise an incoming transfer fee when they moved on.

Anyway, as its knocking on for nearly 10 years ago, I think perhaps folk should move on

OK fair enough, but as pointed out in the article and the Soccernomics book that Garp (I think) talked about before, success is linked to salary rather than transfer spend

Therefore in my mind paying large (by our standard) transfer fees and continued high wages was where it went very wrong, particularly recouping very little on those fees, the largest profit actually being an Allardyce signing.

Megson sold anelka to fund much of his spending

Allardyce would've needed to do the same, I guess

That would've gone down well

Ffs, how the fcuk can folk say he wasn't backed

Allardyce is the best thing that ever happened to BWFC. I doubt we'll see European football again in our life times. The man was a magician really.

True. He was a magician.

There's trickery behind the illusion too. It's all smoke and mirrors.

I think the club learned a lot from losing Todd over the Frandsen deal and I personally believe that every manager since then has been given every penny the club could possibly "spare" at the time.

The managers might not have got the same amount of money to use, but they got what was available.

And without going over the Megson saga once again, to say he wasted money by spending £18m on Cahill, Muamba & Elamander is fucking nonsense.

Cahill is worth much of that on his own.

Muamba was a cracking player, badly used by Coyle before his heart problem.

Elmander was only a bad signing in hindsight. He's an international striker with 84 caps FFS. English football just didn't suit him. You get fuck all for £8m.

Or on Planet Bolty is yours the only opinion that counts?

Well. Menshevik Mick, I am the only one on it.
