Mein Kampf? Your cheap jibes are getting better even if it takes you 48 hours to think up a response.   I suppose the expected comeback should be me levelling Das Kapital or The Revolution Betrayed at you but what's the point? We both know you aren't that well read.

 

I must admit, however, to reading William L. Shirers 'Rise and Fall of the Third Reich' which would be standard fayre in school curricula if I had my way. A salutory warning as to what can happen when the voting public becomes apathetic and accepts demagoguery.

Back to the subject in hand. There are plenty of students who are bright enough to go on to become Doctors - but the unfortunate fact is that we live in a country with hugely disproportionate access to education and in regional expectations for our children.

 

Since becoming a student nurse I've been struck by how few of my counterparts studying to become Dr's are from what you would describe as working class or inner city background. The overwhelming majority tend to be from more affluent parts of the country - particularly the home counties. That is a massive pool of talent which we don't tap into or at least only scratch the surface of.

 

The problem isn't a lack of capable numbers in our population - it's a lack of opportunity.

What opportunities are lacking? Get the grades and you get a place in medical school.

I'm not saying it can't happen - but it's the exception rather than the rule. You would need to be bright, have supportive parents, a school which allowed and encouraged you to thrive and most importantly, live in an environment where there is an expectation that being a Dr is a realistic life goal. Those variables are much more likely if you are born in Henley on Thames rather than Halliwell.

 

The career option of Doctor was certainly never even discussed when I was at School. A career in the Army definitely was. I look at a lot of Nurses working nowadays who I'm sure would make quite capable Doctors had that avenue been realistic option to them as Schoolchildren.

 

We've 65,000,000 odd people in this country. We don't need to import Dr's and Nurses if we deal with social inequality. It's just that importing Doctors and Nurses is easier to sort out and requires less imagination.
