They have a single currency in Europe. You know why the UK hasnt joined it? It is because if we did then the people on the stock exchange wouldnt be able to make money on the pound.

Think a few people on here should live abroad and use (fork out for) the local healthcare system. You might appreciate the NHS a bit more then.

I think the NHS is wonderful and vital. I hope this wont be dismantled in this EU dictatorship in the coming years.

Oh I certainly appreciate it. Sadly it should be respected more and used when required rather than abused. I believe it needs a radical overhaul to be fit for purpose in a few years. I think people who hate the "elite" forget how much they contribute towards it.

But the real reason the NHS is under pressure is because there are so many treatments offered that keep people alive longer and the elderly put a huge strain on its resources. As we are able to treat more and more diseases and keep people alive longer and have a society where many elderly people are having to survive on their own the cost of the NHS is simply going to keep balooning year on year,

 

Tinkering around the edges and talking about overhauls and blaming the wrong things won't solve what is the actual issue. We either need to fund the NHS to carry on treating people as is, OR massively restrict the number of people we're keeping alive into old age. Those are the only two options that make a damn of a difference.

I'm not sure it is just the old biddies who are sapping the NHS. Have a look at missed appointment stats, some of the higher salaries, A&E use when a GP will do, unnecessary ambulance call outs, dare I say NHS tourism. Also, it's interesting to read the original document for NHS and its purpose.

The biggest myth ever, why do the europhiles keep peddling this "sky will fall down" nonsense? Trade is based upon goods being of the correct quality, availability and price. Nothing will be at risk. If we have somat the greeks want to buy at the right price  they will buy it, regardless whether we are in or out of some cosy members club, see USA, China, Japan etc.

stop spending vast amounts on treatments that benefit a miniscule percentage of the population - its harsh to say to parents 'we aint going to treat little jemima' but it might be the only way

If / when the Greeks exit the euro and return to Monopoly money it's expected that the value of that currency will drop roughly 75%

 

This means that the £3b worth of exports that we send them each year (pharmacuticals etc) will cost them x4 in real terms

 

Added to the fact that their banking system will have melted down and they will be in an even bigger mess for some time to come it's highly likely that they will be unable to afford a good proportion of our exports to them

 

Don't forget the knock on effect that it would have with other eurozone countries that are bigger importers of our goods

 

All in all when the Greek exit happens (and it will happen IMO, just not now) it will be bad news for ours and everyone else's economy's

 

in the meantime if it's better for all concerned to kick the can down the road another year or two so we can all get our houses in better order ready for the exit then so be it

 

If that means we fund some relatively small loans via the IMF with little chance of losing any money at all (being a preferred creditor) then it's a small price to pay for short term stability

I guess that really falls into the "stop keeping people alive as long" category. Though I'd argue that an expensive cancer treatment that is done and then allows that person a full and long life is probably far more cost effective than continuous treatment of chronic illnesses that will only get worse. These tough decisions already happen. But treating an ageing more sickly population is just happening by default.

Greece already owe Germany 70 billion and France 30 billion ( I think I read that ). And Greece have had to forfeit control of their economy to that lot now. They effectively have lost their sovereignty, its like an occupation . Germany own one country already then. and so it begins. The thing Greece were complaining about Germany and ww2 was that at the end of the war ALL Germany`s debts were wiped!! I can see what Greece are saying. From the look of the Greek folk, they hate whats going on and are very very angry, this EU is just one big happy country isnt it :lol:

There was a Louis Theroux thing on a while ago, L.A. Stories, and it had an episode about healthcare that was interesting...

 

One of the themes explored was how in America's insurance based system they take treatments to the ninth degree, until all options are exhausted, and that folk will always grasp for the last hope even if it's chance of success is minimal and it's to the extreme deteriment on the quality of their remaining life.

 

Anyway it's not available anywhere to my knowledge (the telly programme), maybe 'on demand' somewhere?

Greece is split on the EU though. For a country in such strife you may wonder why many want to stay in the EU. And why the government is desperate to stay in. The answer is that left on their own they know as does everyone else that they'd go pop within two weeks....
