  • True, but the simple fact is that if Labour had got in and proposed this identical budget the press and other media would have ripped them to shreds.

  • It's always the bankers fault. Whatever the question is.

Given your limited ability to understand any concept that doesn't fit in with a rather limited worldview, I'd say your book reading stopped around Topsie and Tim.   Or Mein Kampf.

Yes it is scary because Merkel is being terrible about it. The Germans will end up owning everything. This is a country take over. The bankers will be buying all this up too.

I need to stop watching the news, it is all so scary. I should get more into gardening and my meditation.

I see Merkel has outed herself as a homophobe.

Which is odd as my gaydar had her marked as an obvious lezzer of the Claire Balding ilk.

The Public Service Unions in Greece will finally fuck them anyway so it isn't worth expending any more grey matter on the place,

Already striking in order to 'bring the agreement down'.

No doubt the biggest employer in Greece anyway - they can bring the place to a standstill. How stupid are these people? They should be cut adrift now and then they will really know what austerity is all about. Living on a diet of nettles and shitting in a hole in the backyard will wear thin after a while. Eurozone austerity measures will then seem generous.

Just goes to show that overspending can catch up, even with Governments, it can't just be created from nowhere.

I hope our debt and other liabilities don't come home to roost with the same effect

The Callaghan government of the late 70s was the first in the developed world to need an IMF loan.

Hence the need for robust action from his successor.

Aye. I distinctly remember his glib comment when asked by journey about the bin men and gravediggers etc being on strike and the country running out of money.......

"Crisis! What crisis?"

And some still have him up there with Churchill as One of the greats

He's fucking ace, he's been on ITV 4 all week...Don't think much of the one with Jim Carrey in it, though.

You don't remember it as well as you think. It was a Sun headline not a Callaghan quote.

The only thing I want to remember from the late 70's is a certain unforgettable night out at Ewood Park.

Rubbish piled up on the paths with rats the size of small donkeys marauding around the place. Aye, that socialist doyen, Baron Callaghan of Cardiff, was yet another prime example of why folk should think before they vote.

Up there with Churchill? FFS.

Many of the industrial disputes which led to streets full if rubbish, the dead unburied etc were with Tory run councils.

What Callaghan actually said: "Well, that's a judgment that you are making. I promise you that if you look at it from outside, and perhaps you're taking rather a parochial view at the moment, I don't think that other people in the world would share the view that there is mounting chaos."

It was down to the Callaghan led Labour government imposing a pay cap on public service workers. It's what people call austerity these days.

As I understand it Greece's biggest problem has not been collecting tax. Is it something like 89% of tax unpaid? Sure I've heard that bandied about...

You have, but it is not true.

I see MPS are going to get a 10% pay increase and doctors are to be made to work 7 days a week, should that not be the other way around

Even with a 10% rise, MPs aren't paid anywhere near enough

MPs are having pensions and other expenses cut so in real terms they are not getting a pay rise & will not cost the public more.

Doctors are hardly underpaid are they?

they get away with murder

Doctors are hardly underpaid are they?

Not at all

In a perfect world we would have twice as many of them working half the hours on half the money (net spend neutral). They would only moan about the money then though and not the hours

We should be incentivise bright youngsters to go through medical school by paying there student loan off for them after they qualify and have served there time

We go some way to doing it with grants but the hefty fees involved in getting through put far too many off

Morally I'd agree about free education for core staff required by society.

The cunt in me thinks why should someone have free education which propels them into a pretty much guaranteed job for life with a huge salary.

Because that would benefit society maybe?
