February 3, 201610 yr We've just had our yellow street lights swapped for these energy saving white ones. I must admit I quite like 'em.
February 3, 201610 yr I hate them, a couple of streets in our village are trialling them at the minute. I understand the need for energy saving, but the colour used is just too "cold" I think
February 3, 201610 yr Fucking shite, especially the ones with a solar panel on the top, seen more of those fucked than working... Like Sweep says, they make the grim look grimmer, the old orange sodium ones at least made things look 'warm', the light pollution from these new ones, they must illuminate some bedrooms at night to the point of being able to read the bloody paper... They're supposed to be cost-saving, apart from the fact they seem shoddy as fook and are always broke, the cost saved when running them must be offset against constantly repairing them and probably replacing them in ten (maybe less) years time if the state of the ones up are anything to judge them by. It's a load of old fucking tinpot window-dressing fiddling while Rome burns 'energy saving eco' bollocks, and all the while China chucks up another twelve coal fired power stations and Jeremy Clarkson builds a marine diesel powered retractable racetrack atop his plush Buckinghamshire mansion, to race his fleet of Land Rover Defenders whilst burning tyres and wheelie bins in oil drums to heat the gantry, track and pits. In all fairness they should last a lot longer than the Sodium lamps, and they're energy saving in the fact that they "turn on and turn off" with the flick of a switch (or indeed light sensor) and don't take an age to warm up like the sodium ones. The sodium lamps offer an all round glow though, which is easier on the eye rather than the directional beam of the LEDs - I suspect a lot of the current LED units are being over driven as well, which will mean another massive cost in "re-lamping" within 5 or 6 years. The issue isn't helped by cheap shite coming in from Asia, there are some really good units being made here in the UK, they just simply cost far more money than they'll ever save once you take into cost the re-lamping costs. There's also the potential issue of LEDs being driven by PWM (especially in the office environment) that will no doubt rear it's head in the next year or so LED technology still has a little way to go before it's suitable for street lighting and even office lighting in my opinion.............not that I know anything about it
February 3, 201610 yr There's some on Crommie Way, it looks like someone is pulling out so everyone slows down.
February 3, 201610 yr They've had them round south central over this way for ages. The locals love em. They can find a vein no problem.
February 3, 201610 yr They've had them round south central over this way for ages. The locals love em. They can find a vein no problem. Do they have them where the bummers meet under the North Pier? I can't remember
February 3, 201610 yr Do they have them where the bummers meet under the North Pier? I can't remember We use head torches round there now.
February 3, 201610 yr In some places they look okay, however, in others, such as Tonge Moor, they make the place look even dingier than it actually is.
February 3, 201610 yr Did anyone else have 'until the streetlights have gone orange' as their playing out deadline as a kid?
February 3, 201610 yr I have one right in front of my house and it lets less light into the bedroom than the old yellow one. All the light seems to be focused downwards. I love 'em.
February 3, 201610 yr Pulse Width Modulation....basically turning them off and on at very high frequency to prolong the LED lifetime. Edited February 3, 201610 yr by Sweep
February 3, 201610 yr Pulse Width Modulation....basically turning them off and on at very high frequency to prolong the LED lifetime. Unemployment solved in an instant....every office employs a junior to turn the lights on and off really quickly with their wages being offset by the savings from prolonging the life of the LEDs. Or am I thinking too far 'out of the box'?
February 3, 201610 yr Sounds like one of the settings on the FM5000. Been sharing on a Bert & Ernie night?
February 3, 201610 yr Sounds like one of the settings on the FM5000. Not likely There is talk of a PWM setting on the FM6000+ though
February 3, 201610 yr Not likely There is talk of a PWM setting on the FM6000+ though You're being 'sucked' into the hype!
February 3, 201610 yr You're being 'sucked' into the hype! You'll be needing a separate attachment for that
February 3, 201610 yr You'll be needing a separate attachment for that Does it come in different accents?
February 3, 201610 yr Does it come in different accents? Just the two at present. Stephen Hawking and Speak n Spell.
February 3, 201610 yr Just the two at present. Stephen Hawking and Speak n Spell. So they put the speak and spell into production after Little Whitt tested it?
