Not a Dorries fan personally but to be fair there aren’t many better brains in Parliament, certainly financially, than the Mogg to take on the job of Chancellor and Liz would at least stand up to the EU and follow proper Conservative policies. You wouldn’t obviously like that but tough shit. 🥳

This cheek-by-jowl thing as an example is a bit of a misleading distraction in terms of looking at distribution of wealth. Its easy to look at it this way as people can see it and therefore that's the reality.

In terms of wealth disparity, the south east of England has historically had more funding and government backing which has lead to an incredible imbalance in wealth, earning ability and other issues such as health and life attainment.

Its easy to see why, the investment in London specifically has created a global world city - a powerhouse in terms of the economy, and without it the UK wouldn't be able to function in the way it does, but we are addicted to its ability to generate income. The over-realiance upon one small part of a very small island has lead to other parts falling by the wayside, with ageing populations as younger people go elsewhere for jobs. The 'brain-drain' of the south east, despite further opportunities being now available is still a huge pull for many people, esp if you want to work in certain sectors, where the opportunities just aren't as widely available in other parts of the country.

Only now are we are the very start of looking at this imbalance - just recloating the BBC doesn't just lift the whole of Salford overnight, but if there are more opportunities for local children who can see that the national broadcaster is in their locality and offering further opportunties, this will help - that success doesn't mean re-location. But it takes a very long time, the idea of 'levelling up' is a generational challange, its not one for us but for our youngest children, and their children to benefit from. That is also why it takes the political will over a good two/three terms in power.

London needs the better transport links so that it continues to attract international investment - as mentioned its chicken and egg this, the government need to put the structures in place for other regions but in tandem a plan to bring business to these areas.

I know - I wasn't really responding to that point directly, more to the nature of why there is the imbalance and that's not something that is always visible.

No worries, I did start writing a longer reply initially about how other areas of the country could be invested in but do not need to be a mini London , Leeds for instance is doing fine.

Its certainly performing the best of the large Northern cities, slightly ahead of greater manchester and whilst they are doing relatively ok, places like Liverpool are falling way behind. Its also built on the financial services, so there is a 'mini London' type bounce and eight of the top places for growth are in the South East, which shows that the gains, whilst good , have still a very long way to go.

So is Sheffield Ani, massive changes with the technology park on the old Orgreave site quietly attracting some really big names. I think there’s a lot more going on than people realise because they only comment on what they actually see. There is plenty happening in the North but it will take time for it to be recognised.

Agree on the financial services point to a degree. Leeds is based heavily on traditional banking (including call centre) whereas as London is very much Corporate Finance. 
I doubt this is anywhere in the country that highlights the difference between getting it right (Leeds) and wrong (Bradford). When I moved over here the actual cities were not that much different. Bradford is now one of the most depressing places I know, based very much on years of good memories compared to the current. 
Be amazed if city of culture makes much difference. 
I thought Liverpool was doing ok but that is based on a weekend visit pre pandemic. W63 seems to say Sheffield doing OK but again no real view on that.
