Isn’t the answer a common sense agreement to amend the rules so Stellantis can continue to trade tariff free.

Amend the rules of international trade for one company?

yea, sure thing.

The rules are there to stop either party buying in a load of stuff from India or China and saying made in England/EU. We just need to start making more stuff, as well as retraining as window cleaners and bramble pickers.

Think it will happen, keep same rules until 2027 and reconsider the % of parts made in UK & EU in the meantime.

So lose out for 6-7 years simply to return to exactly the same position we were in?

Have you any idea how mental that sounds?

if they renegotiate a provision in the deal for Stellantis, rest assured that a million businesses currently losing out because of Brexit will be after their own provisions too.

Absolute fckin carnage.

I’m all for manufacturing goods in uk or eu rather than cheaper alternatives but if a slight tweak to the % of parts made outside uk eu saves 100s of thousands of jobs then you’d hope common sense would apply.

Lose out on what? Stellantis ask for rules to stay as they are until 2027 and the change the % parts that need to be uk eu thereafter.

Stellantis, which makes electric vans at its Ellesmere Port factory in Cheshire, called on the government to come to an agreement with the EU to keep rules as they are until 2027.

The renegotiation they want has happened yet.

The rules are about to change. And they will lose out.

That's the whole point.

My company (a manufacturer) has lost out because of Brexit. I doubt Rishi and co. would renegotiate a deal just for us though. If they did, I'd expect every man and his dog to want one as well.

They are happy with rules at present and until 2027 then want a change so it allows more products to be made outside of eu/uk so that no tariff is applied, if the eu uk can’t agree then then they are facilitating potentially a job loss of 100s of thousand of folk, not rocket science what needs to happen and given the scale of potential job losses I’d expect that both parties can agree the solution is to allow a higher proportion of parts to be non eu uk.

We are in a transition period between Jan next year and 2027. After that the rules are even more stringent on rules of origin. Unless the Government make great strides in battery manufacture then it is not going to happen. US, China and EU are all doing it but it is going to be difficult for any medium sized country to compete I'm afraid.

But brexit has created a problem for the UK that didn’t exist previously though. The EU may have a similar issue but has a wider internal market to find alternative parts. We are an island that has made trading and manufacturing harder for ourselves.

So yet again the oven ready deal wasn't anywhere near ready and businesses are struggling to even adapt during this transition period.

Prof Cox nails it.

On this issue Stellantis pointing out that because of the war and increase in raw materials and energy that they can’t meet the 45% parts eu uk made, it’s tiresome that every bump in the road brings out the EU flag brigade. It’s a simple amend to the 45% rule that’s required and the problem goes away.

That’s the challenge and the UK government need to be all over it, not sure where they are up to on developing a battery factory here in the UK.  (I’d better do some research)

Not with the current electoral system. These extreme factions have to align themselves with more moderate parties to have any chance of influence. Same applies Labour, Conservative doesn't matter.

The answer is PR. The country needs it and fast.

The Tories are shitting themselves over PR. That comes in they are fucked.

I voted against it because Clegg was a snake. I'm an eejit.

The challenge would be easier if we weren't also trying to untangle red tape we wrapped around ourselves in order to return to the position we were in 7 years ago.

Blind.

The EU is the king of red tape.

No. It makes me think how much that graph looks like the one showing increased immigration figures over the same period. What a coincidence.

So, it's immigrants using foodbanks?

Or are you suggesting whiteys are resorting to foodbanks because we've allowed too many foreigners in?

We need clarity here.

Lord Gammon has, in a rare outbreak of telling the truth, suggested that Brexit (thus far) has failed.........he's correct that we've been let down by our own politicians during the process of leaving (although some will probably have you believe it's down to the ECHR and sinister slags)

Amazing if you go back on this thread you will find real visionaries saying our lot were fucking useless and would fuck it up. The gammons claiming we would piss it.

Future generations will look back and think, 'what the fuck were they playing at?'

Not for anyone who’s main reason for leaving was to not be part of a federal European project.
