I've got some sympathy though mate - and it is a useful safety net for a lot of people who otherwise would go under. 

I've got a friend down in Kent for example. Single mum whose fella left her and her son. She's a really hard worker, a counsellor and also picks up whatever work she can working as a receptionist at a golf club. 

The way house prices are down there - she'd be destitute if it wasn't for UC. And she still has to deal with the 'if you can't afford kids then you shouldn't have them' brigade. 

I get that there are some people taking the piss. But that always happens to some extent whenever you offer a state benefit. But it also does a lot of good. It's a difficult balance to get right I suppose.

You're totally missing my point.

I'm not saying their aren't swathes of folk deserving of benefits or UC.

But if you've got a mortgage and something happens to lead you down that path, you're in a better position if you're renting.

That's all I was saying.

It's an easier way of life to claim what you can and claim housing benefit than graft your balls off to pay a mortgage and get taxed to death on everything you earn or save.

He's talking about a large swathe of people who have their rent paid, get given free money just for being boneidle slobs and having a few kids.

To them , their lives are cushy as fuck. No job to worry about, just give their kids the bare minimum then pop to the eyebrow shop and the tattoo parlour whilst they;'re at school, then take them to the local flat roofed pub and get shedded.

These people exist and we all know it.

All we ask as knackered taxpayers, is that our money goes to people who genuinely need it rather than scummy cunts just playing the system.

Reduce their money.

Instead of idling away the hours in the eyebrow shop I’d have them picking litter, making the local community a tidier, cleaner place. Restore some civic pride.

Im sure there are other jobs the idle could do to earn their keep.

The welfare bill is out of control, it exceeds our GDP ffs. The cost to assess all cases individually would be worth it for the savings it would inevitably bring.

Which is also true. 

I've another friend who has just gone back into employment after being laid off. But he's only looking for 2 days a week because any more than that and he'll have his UC taken off him.

Needs to keep his earnings under £1000 a month. He could do the other 3 days but financially he'd only be in a slightly better position.  So much as I think he's taking the piss - I can understand why he might make that decision from a pragmatic perspective. 

It's something that needs addressing somehow - but it's not an easy fix.

Think its income tax take..which neglects VAT + other taxes which is nearly 50% more than income tax.
