January 17, 20188 yr Western society is predicated on paternalism, the most powerful group are white men who earn over s certain amount, and they have the ability to earn more because that’s how society is set up. The idea that one country is a beacon of equality is nonsense. Everyday sexism doesn’t take the form of a wolf whistle or a bum pinch, it’s innate in our structures. Until these are challenged then it will always be the same, and it’s difficult because who wants to relinquish power? No one and especially mediocre white men who have unfairly benefitted. Absolutely agree. The thing I always find funny on here about the strong opinions expressed regarding sexism and racism, is that EVERY SINGLE PERSON casting doubt on the motives of pro-equality campaigners is a white male. Maybe we should just shut the fuck up for a bit, seeing as none of us know what it's like being a woman or a non-white person in this country. As for the rest of the world - pointing out others failures doesn't mean you've succeeded.
January 17, 20188 yr Surely by definition that is subjectification of all who have posted on this thread? You know that I am a white male? A father and son are involved in an accident; the father dies en route to hospital, the son rushed into surgery. The surgeon says stop: I can't operate...This is my son...
January 17, 20188 yr The surgeon is his real deadbeat dad... Or the 'father' killed in the crash was his elderly gay lover - mistaken for his pops in the confusion of the crash...
January 17, 20188 yr Surely by definition that is subjectification of all who have posted on this thread? You know that I am a white male? No. It's just a suggestion that people who have never experienced sexism or racism or sexual harrassment probably aren't the best positioned to criticise the peaceful political/legal actions of those that have...
January 17, 20188 yr No. It's just a suggestion that people who have never experienced sexism or racism or sexual harrassment probably aren't the best positioned to criticise the peaceful political/legal actions of those that have...And you know they haven't because?
January 17, 20188 yr And you know they haven't because? I know nothing of the sort. I am making assumptions based on their criticism of others who have. As I said, maybe we should just shut the fuck up and let actual victims have their say...
January 18, 20188 yr I can't think of a single situation where my female partner has been the victim of sexism or where being a woman has held her back in any sense. In my professional life I can point to countless occasions where being male puts me at a significant disadvantage and where there is an inherent discrimination. However - I don't choose to paint myself as a 'victim' and get on with things anyway. I think we're in real danger of losing perspective on how far we've come as a society and creating yet another artificial divide between our citizens which needn't be there. The point I'm trying to make is that there might exist particular fields or situations where for historical reasons being of one sex or the other might put you at a slight advantage/disadvantage. But we amplify these threats and in my experience - talent and hard work will win out over what bits you were born with.
January 18, 20188 yr I've just asked Mrs Kent and she says she can't think of any situations where being a woman has held her back either. Apart from the misfortune of having to live with me obviously :-)

Have a +1 As you age, realism trumps (see what I did there?) idealism. Carry on like this and we'll be issuing an invite for you to join the 1923 Committee. I'll have to run it by the other eight but you show great promise.

Most folk do to be fair, it's usually middle class whites (top tier dwellers) banging the drum on behalf of those they feel they should protect due to some imagined guilt complex. The worlds not fair. Some are born lucky some aren't. You make the best you can with the hand your dealt and in the UK, regardless of race or gender, you have as good, if not better, a chance of succeeding as anywhere else. Bit like the US Must be terrible . . . And no it doesn't, but what exactly would constitute success in your eyes?
January 18, 20188 yr Or teaching Or the arts - but just because certain sectors (generally the poorer paid sectors and public sectors) are staffed mainly by women doesn’t mean bog all about societies constructs - in fact it actually reaffirms the point because of the issue above that these sectors are generally the poorest paid. Indeed teaching also outlines the point even more with over 60% of teachers female but when it comes to headships the majority are men. So just because a sector is mainly staffed by women doesn’t mean anything regarding a patriarchal society, in fact it actually reconfirms it.

I don't think you'll ever have a society that isn't to a lesser or greater degree. It's because women have vaginas. (see Kent's post below for a more detailed explanation on that point ) I'm just not seeing all this sexism that you and Cheese are so concerned about other than the cultural stuff mentioned above. January 18, 20188 yr It's not rocket science. A significant proportion of women take a large slice of their most upwardly mobile professional life having and caring for children. There's not a huge amount we can realistically do about that - and until we stop looking at possibly the most worthwhile thing one human being can do for another as somehow being a negative then I fear we're all doomed.
January 18, 20188 yr It’s because you’re looking at sexism from a purely sexual standpoint - it’s far more invasive and less outwardly obvious discrimination. There are more men in senior executive positions, men overall get paid far more than women, women are more likely to achieve academically and yet find themselves lowering expectations in the workplace, women’s successes are generally seen pejoratively. I know folk have been reading stuff to expand their own viewpoints, on this I recommend a short book called From Medusa to Merkel: Women in Power. It takes a couple of hours and is certainly worth having a read through if you are interested in this topic.

There's not a huge amount we can realistically do about that - and until we stop looking at possibly the most worthwhile thing one human being can do for another as somehow being a negative then I fear we're all doomed. That in itself needs looking at as well. Thankfully companies now allow better paternal leave for farthers; many men want the option- and a women’s career should have to stop because of children - it should be a shared responsibility. In many cases it can’t be because the bloke is the main bread winner - so it’s a vicious circle. In fact I know one woman who is coming back in a few weeks after 5months off and her husband has taken a year off - because he gets the better paternity leave. So, thankfully things are changing in this regard.

The facts show that talent and hard work simply don’t win out. It’s not how society is set up and the examples are manifold. I think the view above loses perspective on how far we still have to go.
January 18, 20188 yr Author hmm. I wonder why the UK is such a popular destination for immigrants from all over the world? Bit like the US Must be terrible . . . And no it doesn't, but what exactly would constitute success in your eyes? Fuck me. I can read his posts when you do that pal. I can't escape the twat it seems. Amazing logic of his that everyone expressing an opinion on this subject on here is a white male. Astounding statistic. Why, there can only be around 98% of us on here who are white males

Carry on telling everyone how claims of sexism and racism are all overblown nonsense, because as a white man, you're more qualified than anyone to come to that conclusion..

Carry on telling everyone how claims of sexism and racism are all overblown nonsense, because as a white man, you're more qualified than anyone to come to that conclusion.. I don't get this 'as a white man' thing. Saw a very interesting documentary on whites in S Africa at the moment. Two wrongs n all that . . . My point being racism is all over the world, but less of an issue here than many other places; and if you think it's a 'white man' thing your completely wrong. Of course racial discrimination happens here. It's no great surprise that as the majority 'race' is white, of course the majority of racial incidents are going to be by whites against non-whites - that's purely due to %'s. Not inherent racism in one race. Folk need to get past the colour of skin part an look at equality of opportunity. That, and culture(s) are the biggest issues today. Apologies, Bolty
January 18, 20188 yr No one is saying because if your sex or skin colour you can’t have an opinion, but that to say everything is fine from that position and ignoring simple facts does smack of a point of view which doesn’t get challenged and yes, backs up what I was saying. And as a percentage black on black violence is more prevelant. Are you saying that’s to do with percentages, a higher percentage are black on black crime in London - now why would that be. Tie in the fact that most are in social deprevation - and you’ll have an answer. If you are a white, middle class, middle aged male, you have all the power in this society. Even if you don’t feel like it.
