We knocked them out of the cup in the middle of their rise from the ashes.

We beat them 5-0 at Burnden in another dark day for them.

Then we have Super John in the playoffs. Many of them say the atmosphere that night was their most intimidating.

Then two seasons later we do the double. Super John scores two at theirs then comes out doing kick ups on his own at ours. 20 man brawl shortly after and a McGinlay goal right in front of them followed by Lofty winding them up. Bloomin marvellous :)

Few seasons later we beat them at Home to stop them getting in Play offs live on telly.

Then we all but relegate them at theirs with SKD having the game of his life and should've been sent off.

We had them on toast for well over a decade.

That day they whooped us 5-0 to go up meant a lot to them...

Blimey, great summary, I'd forgotten half of those even though I attended 90% of them 😀

And yes, you mention the cup win, presume you mean the 2-0 at their place (McGinlay and Green?), when we were 3rd div, that must have gutted them at the time although it doesn't get mentioned a lot now.  We also knocked Wolves out of the FA Cup at Reebok when there were still decent crowds at that stage of the comp, Scott Sellars got one, Robbie Keane for them, won 2-1.

I hadn't realised just how many big games we'd had against them especially at Burnden.  Definitely got all the ingredients of a genuine rivalry, other than geography.  God knows when we'll play them again though.

I have never witnessed trouble at a football game certainly not involving Bolton as i did as a kid watching that last game of the season in 77.....Not United on the Friday night, Stoke, Everton in the semi or Chelsea all around the same time.

This game has always stood out in my memory....We battered wolves but Richards scored and Wolves fans invaded the pitch and headed towards the lever end. They were met by Bolton fans from both the Burnden paddock  and Manchester Road before they even reached the half way line.

Me too, although I was only 10 and going to the game was all new to me, I assumed it was always like that! (Leeds in the cup that season was another).  I was stood on the corner of Lever End and Burnden Paddock and couldn't believe the site of the Wolves fans seemingly marauding through the Embankment, there were hundreds kicking off in the home end.  League games just weren't all ticket in them days, away fans could go where they wanted especially if their section was full.  I remember being a bit scared and as I wasn't a committed fan at that stage, was more bothered about getting home in one piece than the result.

They beat us 2-1 that day, second year at Reebok. They brought loads that day, 18k on overall

Oh right fair enough, I was sat in NSL and just remember Keane and Sellars scoring, but now you mention it yes it was 2-1 to them not us.  I didn't think Wolves brought loads, I'm sure they were only in the lower tier.  In them days we didn't reduce prices to £10 for cup ties if it was decent opposition, that would have been £15 minimum even 20 odd years ago.  Blackburn was another around the same era, went to a replay and both games were 20k plus, paying proper prices, and we weren't getting them crowds for league games in those days (championship not Prem).

Don’t doubt Matt’s spreadsheet.

Robbie Keane was 3 years offside.

I ended up right at the front and centre of the NSL that day and could barely make out what was happening in the other half, both Keane's goals were at the other end

It was that day I decided bar away days where I have no choice I'm never sitting in the lower end behind the goals ever again

I can understand how the passage of time can lead to the forgetting of scorelines and goalscorers, but how the fuck does it lead to getting the actual result wrong? 😁

I really don’t want to be appearing as picky as I have been on this thread, but Keane scored in the 8th and 65th minute, so he scored one at each end, sorry 🙈

Pick away

Was over 25 years ago

I definitely have a memory of the second one going in at the other end

Not being able to see much but knowing it went in because he ran off celebrating and their fans cheering

It was a defining game in my deciding of where not to sit at matches

We sat in NSU back then and yeah I remember Keane running off celebrating with their fans

He was an incredible talent, looking back

There will be games this season or last I can hardly remember the result of, never mind 20 years ago!  I recall "moments" ie the Keane volleyed goal in South Stand and Sellars equalising, but the result had minimal impact so its gone from my memory bank.  Too many home defeats in my head now, some lesser one's have had to make way.

I had the same experience around the same era when we played Yeovil in the FA Cup.  I found myself sat near the front of NSL behind the nets, never again.  I don't have a clue what the score was (presume we won as its not gone down as a big cup shock).

Don't be too harsh. This kind of clouding of the memories has real potential 😄

My first job, after Uni, was on the Wirral. There was an Apprentice Welder there, Ian Griffiths, supposedly a vg footballer & was playing for Tranmere Reserves. They wanted him to sign full time & he asked my advice. We arranged that he completed his skills training with us whilst signing with them. My words of wisdom were "go for it. Don't become an "I could've been'.

He played for them, Wrexham, Southport, Wigan & got 400 pro games in on 3rd & 4th division levels. He said he very nearly didn't sign but understood my 'go for it' advice.

At that time Tranmere were no rivals & I respected fans who could so easily support the Scouse teams.

As they grew a bit though they didn't half get mouthy. The Play-Off final scarred me. But, really, the proper nast began with the shite twat Aldridge creating a one-sided rivalry with Allardyce. I think we can say Aldridge comprehensively lost that battle.

There was a bit of animosity when I was growing up (though admittedly I didn't punch anyone because of it) about the amount of airtime given to tinpot twats Tranmere by Elton and Rob.

WTF are these fuckers on the TV all the time. We seemed to get very little time despite clearly being of more interest.

John O’Kane equaliser in first half and Ricketts winner in injury time

Very early 80s we must have been fresh out of the 1st division and either had no game or were away at somewhere uninteresting, anyway, my mate says do you fancy going to a different match? I think it might have been Wigan's first season in the league, anyway we didn't have a clue where the ground was as we had gone on the 615 up Deane and we didn't even know who they were playing.

Ground was miles from town centre and a bit of an eye opener like we expected really and they were playing Tranmere, neither of us had a clue where Tranmere was.

Crowd was 3-3.5k max but OMG it was non stop aggro between 12-13 year old kids as if it had been brewing forever.

Who even knew these places existed??

Cup game v Yeovil ?

Maybe we had two.

Edit. We had two. It was the away one in 2004 I was thinking of. A Tuesday evening. I watched it on TV from the George Hotel in Piercebridge, Co. Durham where the song 'My Grandfather's Clock' was written. They did have a Grandfather Clock too.

6 Jan 2001 Bolton v Yeovil L 2-1     FA Cup.

21 Sep 2004 Yeovil v Bolton 0-2     League Cup.

I had a factory down tjere for a while.

Absolutely poverty stricken. Overrun by Eastern Europeans and minimum wage galore almost all then boosted by benefits. More drugs than Boots.

Turning up for work seemed to be entirely voluntary.

It needn't be. It should be a lovely market town.

I'd advise never going to Merthyr Tydfil though. It's 3x worse.
