Despite my Scottish heritage, I prefer bourbon.

Don’t mind a single malt, like, but I’ve developed a real taste for the American stuff.

Question for the class - what’s the difference between straight bourbon and rye? Is it worth me spending £30 for rye?

Got in to supping whiskey a couple of years ago. Jim Beam and JD are descent. The whiskey/bourbon connoisseur won't like this but the JD Tennessee Fire is ace. Not been daring enough to fork out for one of them Japanese whiskeys yet. Anyone tryed the Jap stuff?

Are they not mainly Scotch style drinks?

Im probably a bit soft, but I prefer the sweetness of bourbon. Headaches don’t seem as bad the day after either.

Whyte and Mackay is pretty good. And that's coming from someone who isn't a  fan of the blended stuff.

Jack Daniels simply nails it

The bog standard stuff is very good. The premium stuff is excellent and their limited edition stuff (White Rabbit Saloon for example) is supreme

Jim Beam, Wild Turkey, Woodford, etc is highly acceptable but not on a par imo. Makers Mark is the exception. They stick to a script and produce a quality drop

Irish is good. Bushmills, Tullamore Dew being highly drinkable. But nothing will ever beat Redbreast - much better than anything on the planet imo of any type of whiskey

Scotch is what puts people off whiskey/whisky for me. Too harsh. Monkey Shoulder is the only one I can say that I like

If you like JD, Amazon are selling JD Single barrel barrel proof for £55.  Good price and it's possibly the best full proof bourbon/TW  I've had.  I drink about 60% Scotch and the rest Irish, rye  and bourbon.  I find bourbon to be the harshest (alcohol wise) actually but it suits the style.  I particularly like Wild Turkey 101 or Rare Breed, which are also good deals.  Ive got a Redbreast 12 cask strength in the go at the minute.  What a drop that is ...

A Glenfarclas 25 and Flaming Heart from Compass Box await my 40th at end o'month.  Canny wait ...

I've had a few but there's little out there these days that's decent and affordable, unless you wanna fork out £10,000+ on a Karuizawa ...

Nikka Whiskey from the Barrel is the best value for money and you can pick it up online or in Waitrose for about £35 (50cl bottle though ...)  It's a cracking blend that beats many a single malt and leans towards the sweeter bourbon style so bourbon fans would probably like it.

I quite like Nikka Pure Malt Black as well but that's about £45 for the same size ...

It's a well-travelled rumour that a lot of Jap whisk(e)y has Scotch malt in it (probably Ben Nevis).  Those are the only two I'd even look at now although some say Suntory Toki blend is OK and that's in most supermarkets.

There are big variations in taste across Scotch whiskies. Try Speysides if you find Scotch too harsh generally. The entry level Balvenie, Macallan or Glenfarclas would be a good place to start if you wanted to dip your toe into Scotch, they are a world away from the big, peaty Laphroaigs and Lagavulins.

Tried Macallan and don’t like it. Are the other two different? Always open to try summat if recommended

They aren't a million miles from Macallan so it may be that Scotch just isn't for you. Personally I find all of them very smooth, especially with a small drop of water. 

My brother likes a dram, but he prefers less peaty, smoother Speyside types, though he also likes edradour. Many to choose from, and it is indeed recommended to add a drop of water.

Some of these specialist whiskey shops do have a number of sample bottles open, and are willing to let you try a few. Useful if you don't want to spend a shed load finding one you like.

I do my own from Frosties and age it on JD barrel chips.

I haven't got a clue.

The Home Secretary character in that 'Cobra' on Sky mentioned it a couple of times though.

If you like a smooth whisky why would anyone drink scotch? Irish single malts are much smoother. It's all to do with the triple distilling compared to two with scotch.

 

I got a bottle of Woodford reserve rye today.

Its fucking delicious.

Its got the sweetness of bourbon, the spiciness of a single malt and put together it makes for a silky gobful of joy.

That may well be the case. Monkey Shoulder was introduced to try to get the younger generation interested in Scotch I believe. May be talking shite. Anyhow if Scotch is your tipple enjoy. Plenty do likewise and fair play
