i never knew my paternal grandad

After the war, he wanted to be a lay preacher, whatever that is

He left wis wife and son in Bolton and I think he went overseas, never to be seen again

Anyway, towards the end of his life, my dad mentioned his dad had been awarded the MM and that he might like to know what his dad had got up to

We never made much progress despite contacting his regiment  and then his dementia took over

Anyway, ive just found his MM up for sale on a UK site

My dad said that as far as he knew, his dad had never received the medal

Do any of you know who other than my dads father couldve claimed the medal

Ie how do you claim them?

Just wondering if I may have some relatives

My Dad refused to collect his medals. He was really sad about spending the best years of his life in shit holes in Gibraltar and North Africa and hearing that his brother had died in a bombing mission. It really got to him

Anyway, we finally persuaded him to sign a document just before he died 10 years ago and they were sent to him and I have them now

I’ll see if I can find the documentation and letters that got them sent

Can you not ask the seller where they got them from?

Grandad got awarded the Burma Star, my Dad lost it playing with it as a kid, apparently Grandad didn't really see it as something worthwhile.

I suppose when you have been in that situation some people just don't want reminding.

A lot of Lancashire lads  joined the East Lancs Regiment a the beginning of the war (my Dad included) and they eventually became the 4th RTR. If your grandad had followed this path then I would have been able to help as I have researched the Regiment over the years.

I suggest first call will be the Regimental Diaries, you need to get in touch with the Regiment, you will be amazed how much they have on record and how they will help. You will enjoy the journey.

I think the Bolton Wanderers team signed up to the Royal Artillery en masse

My dad, for some reason, was born in cromer

His mum was proper bolton stock, so i wonder if he was already doing the preacher bit

Dad was born in 1934, so whether they were back up here by war time, i dunno
